The critics are already out in full force, many of whom are trying to legally attack the new sanctuary city law signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. But as the smoke clears from the signing of the law, the motives behind it are not being discussed by those who oppose it.
As the end of the day, it comes down to putting American citizens first, a notion that seems to be anathema to the left.
According to Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, “It absolutely gives us the ability to partner with federal law enforcement agencies to make sure we’re doing everything we can to fight illegal immigration.”
In the response by the sheriff, we get to see the heart of the matter: partnership. Law enforcement has demonstrated time and time again when there’s cooperation, information sharing, trust, and coordination, the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. The bad guys want nothing more than for law enforcement agencies to stop working together. It makes it easier to evade capture and continue breaking the law when agencies in a sanctuary city defy orders from federal law enforcement, including ICE.
Critics argue that illegal immigrants are not the “bad guys,” but as I’ve covered on this site ad nauseum, there is no shortage of very bad people coming into our country illegally and continuing to do their deeds. Many of them have received protection from sanctuary cities. This must be put to an end.
The Governor invoked the standard talking points about the new law, but it really does come down to a compassionate appreciation of the plight of people who want to be in this country that is rightly superseded by the safety of American citizens.
Stopping sanctuary cities is not about punishing immigrants, as the Democrats like to claim. It’s about keeping American citizens, legal immigrants, and even most illegal immigrants safe from the criminal aliens living here.
