This morning on Fox and Friends, Brian Kilmeade said, “Sometimes in boxing when there’s a draw, the referee holds both boxers’ hands up. Perhaps if the Democrats would work with the President to solve the crisis at the border, they could claim victory with him.” I may not have gotten his words exactly right, but the point is clear. Solving a problem together with the other side lets both sides claim success. And the Democrats can’t let themselves do that.
My mother had a somewhat more artful way of putting this. She’d say, “Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.” In other words, look at the greater good. One great example of this is the recent Criminal Justice Reform Bill.
Known as the “First Step Act,” it reduced a number of sentences which disproportionately affected blacks. Its legislative history is tortuous, but it originated in the Republican-led House in 2018. When it failed to make it through the Senate, the Democrats brought it up again, and this time, with Democratic input, it was passed in both houses. President Trump had actively supported it, and signed it into law.
This is where the Democrats shot themselves in their collective feet. They refused to take a victory lap with President Trump. He would happily invite them to the stage, the way a number of blacks affected by the law were. But they found themselves unable to admit that there was any redeeming feature whatever to the President. “Orange Man Bad” prevented them from sharing the limelight. So President Trump gets solo billing for making life better for the black community.
I have written elsewhere about Trump Derangement Syndrome. This is a clear psychiatric disorder based on a core element of identity politics. “I am good, you are bad.” And, of course, if you are bad, nothing you do can ever be good. The converse is that everything I do is good.
Anyone with a functioning brain recognizes that in human endeavor, nothing is ever perfect. And even evil people do some things well. Thus, identity politics paralyzes the side that practices it. There is no possibility of ever working with the other side. Even the First Step Act isn’t a real part of Leftist history, since that involved working with the other side.
Most Americans believe that it is the duty of our Congress to work across the aisle to make America better. That concept is encapsulated in “Make America Great Again.” But the Master Persuader – or should I say the Master Deal-maker – has negotiated a great leap forward in border security. This was a solo act in reality because the Left cannot envision any possibility where anything Donald Trump would agree to is good. So they have to trash it.
The first trashing is the claim that there is nothing new in the deal. It hasn’t taken long for that to be debunked, but now that the claim has been made, many on the Left will hold on to it, because it gives them an excuse to avoid reality. This denial is essential to maintaining the psyche of identity politics. If the Left has to face reality, it would truly melt, since no part of its essential truth claims can be supported.
The fact that the Left strongly supported (in voice only, not in legislation) border security when Barack Obama was President is completely lost on the them. It’s ancient history and it’s time to Move On. But if it were forced to face that reality, its core identity would be threatened. And of course, “Orange Man Bad” would have to be shelved. After all, they would now be cooperating with their arch-enemy to achieve a common goal. OMG! So they cut off their nose to spite their face.
This is not lost on the public at large, and will not be if Republicans actually campaign on it. Americans – those who believe that they should be allowed to bust their butts to make a better life and not have it stolen by the government – see in President Trump a street fighter who makes promises and tries to stick by them. In Democrats they see a bunch of NPCs who are blowing with the wind. Biden’s latest neck-snapping flips on the Hyde Amendment are just the latest flashing red light.
Any Republican bold enough to stick to his guns and promote the well-being of Americans stands a very good chance of winning, even in Democrat-leaning districts. But wishy-washy RINOs will smell as bad as the dead fish they resemble, and lose.
