Speculation that Representative Justin Amash (R-MI) may run for president as a Libertarian would seem to be aided by results of a recent poll. If the numbers hold up, State Representative Jim Lower could boot Amash out of his seat in the House during the GOP primary.
The poll by Lansing-based Practical Political Consulting shows Lower up by 16%.

Amash came under fire after siding with Democrats and calling for President Trump’s impeachment following the release of the Mueller report. He has since enjoyed a lot of support from Libertarians and NeverTrump Republicans, but has been attacked by much of the GOP. Yesterday, he left the House Freedom Caucus.
Lower expressed contentment in Twitter following the release of the poll:
We are already leading against #nevertrumpamash according to independent polling! In order to grow and expand this lead we will need your help! Please donate at https://t.co/HftCmN1wWB! @realDonaldTrump @GOPChairwoman @MIGOPChair @IngrahamAngle @LouDobbs @marklevinshow https://t.co/tLLpe0i8X2

The firm found that Amash's support was concentrated among voters coded as ticket-splitters or Democrat-leaning. Among hardcore Republicans, who are likely to provide a much larger share of the votes cast in a Republican primary, Amash is losing to Lower by more than 2-to-1. https://t.co/tLLpe0i8X2

Those who supported Amash were also found to have signed left-leaning petitions, such as the "Voters Not Politicians" anti-gerrymandering petitions." Lower's support is concentrated among respondents who had previously signed Right to Life or anti-gay marriage petitions. https://t.co/tLLpe0i8X2

There are four options for Amash:
- Keep going and try to win the primary
- Leave Congress and run for president
- Run for Congress as a Libertarian
- Move to the private sector
It’s still far too early in election season for Amash to be too concerned, but it’s telling that he’s down by so many points. He may just run for president in order to save face instead of losing to Lower.
