No sane person wants tariffs levied on Mexico. However, truth be told, Democrats intractability on border security and their allies tying up the few Executive actions the President can take in the courts leave few options. The President’s announcement on trade was a surprise to many, and many were skeptical of the effectiveness of the tariff threat.
However, now there are promising signs from Mexico’s southern border. From Reuters:
Mexican soldiers, armed police and migration officials blocked hundreds of migrants after they crossed the border from Guatemala in a caravan into southern Mexico on Wednesday, and detained dozens of them, a witness from a migrant aid group and an official said.
This story coincides with meetings between the Trump administration, led by Vice-President Mike Pence, and the Mexican government. The Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, had previously said he preferred dialogue to a trade war. According to NBC News, this seems to be supported by his constituents.
Mexican law enforcement and military personnel have detained somewhere between 350 and 400 people trying to cross their southern border. The detainees have been taken to migrant centers for processing. It appears the Mexican government is making a good faith effort in advance of negotiations, which is a hopeful sign that the President will not be required to implement tariffs.
Ultimately the imposition of tariffs is not a move that any sane American wants to see happen. However, place blame where blame is due if this becomes reality. This last-ditch effort by the President lies squarely on the Democrats for refusing to do anything about border security and the voters who gave them the majority in the House during the midterms.
Additionally, Reuter’s reports that the leaders of migrant advocacy groups have also been detained. Leaders of the transborder organization Pueblo Sin Fronteras have been detained in Mexico City. This group actually advertises and promotes caravans on their website.
It is not the first time they have been associated with the organization and promotion of caravans heading to the U.S. border. In fact, it is also not the first time Irineo Mujica, an American citizen, has been detained in Mexico. She was previously accused of assaulting law enforcement personnel during a protest near the border. A Facebook post gives contact information for Mujica in Mexico as well as Robert Corona and Alex Messing in the United States.
According to Capital Research Center, (CRC) an investigative think tank, People Without Borders (Pueblo Sin Fronteras) has been operating in conjunction with other migrant and illegal immigrants rights groups in the United States since at least 2010. And they openly admit to coordinating and assisting caravans of over 1,000 economic migrants prior to 2018.
Even more mind-boggling, these groups have been given tax-exempt status in the intervening years to coordinate to break federal immigration law. This seems somewhat stunning to me. Of course, this status could apply to groups focused on advocating for illegal immigrants rights once they are in the United States. That would seem to be protected by freedom of speech and association. But organizing caravans to the border? According to the CRC in 2018:
Regardless, Pueblo Sin Fronteras’s efforts continue with the aid of a third organization: the Centro Sin Fronteras (“Center Without Borders”), a 501(c)(3) illegal immigration organizing group headquartered in the Lincoln United Methodist Church in Chicago.
It would seem to me to continue to qualify for tax-exempt status, the organization of caravans by the groups should cease and desist immediately.
