Which of these people is real? Take a close look.
If you came to the conclusion that the man is real, you would be incorrect. Unfortunately, if you concluded the woman is real, you would be wrong as well. Neither are real people. Their images are generated by artificial intelligence.
Tesla’s Elon Musk has often said we’re on the verge of seeing technology that creates artificial environments that are indistinguishable from reality. That reality appears to be here in so many ways, it’s starting to get truly scary.
There are technologies available to the public (and better ones that are not) that can essentially create fake people. Give them a face. Give them a voice. All artificial. All very difficult to tell that they’re not real, even when experts examine them. This is a problem.
The folks at Truthstream Media made a video exposing the reality of false realities emerging around us. They also explored some of the implications that could come to pass as these technologies improve. Imagine a speech delivered by a world leader that wasn’t actually real. Or an imaginary person sought by police because they recorded a video confession to a crime that allows the real culprit to be released. Off the top of my head, I can think of half a dozen circumstances that I dare not share in which this type of technology could be used for nefarious purposes.
It seems like a problem without a solution as we barrel forward into the technological unknown without preparing for the consequences of our innovations. Should we fear the future? Those who do not aren’t paying close enough attention.
