Senator Kamala Harris, one of the frontrunners for the Democratic nomination for president, has taken a measured approach to calling for President Trump’s impeachment. In an interview with Noticias Telemundo, Harris tried to predict how the President would use impeachment to boost his own support.
“There may be strategic reasons not to begin an impeachment proceeding, which is that the President may use this as a rallying cry, as he has done before, to say this is a witch hunt and people are trying to get me, and he will confuse… he will try to confuse voters about what it really is,” she said.
As was posted here before, impeachment at this point would be a gift to the President. The only two ways impeachment could hurt him is if it were applied in the heat of the general election season after the nominee is selected or if there’s something not in the Mueller report the President needs hidden. Otherwise, impeachment soon would benefit him much more than it would hurt.
“And the reality is also that the House will do its process, but then it has to go over to the Senate for a vote,” she continued. “And it is very unlikely that this Senate, which is run by Republicans, will vote to actually impeach, and convict the President on impeachment charges. And, so what would end up happening at the end of that process? What ends up happening is that he then runs around and says: see, they tried to get me, and they couldn’t get me.”
But that’s not what the radical wing of the Democratic Party wants to hear. Those who are most likely to hit the primary polls are the ones who are screaming for impeachment now, now, and now. So Harris hedged her bets by attempting to take the high road by saying despite the risks, Democrats should push forward anyway.
“I am of the mind that… yes, so that could create a strength for him in terms of the election… But I am of the mind that we have to fight for the integrity of the checks and balances of our system,” she said. “When any one in government abuses its power, it has to be checked and balanced. In this case, the Mueller report made very clear that this President and his administration engaged in obstruction of justice. There should be a consequence for that.”
There are very few ways this can end well for the Democrats. They have the public perception of holding the cards, but in reality they’re stuck with a terrible hand and a President who is daring them to play it.
