INTROSPECTION
How often do we pause and reflect on what makes us tick? Not often enough. All too many folks just go minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month, year-by-year, decade-by-decade until eventually we draw our final breath.
Cradle to grave without ever thinking about our contributions to our family, our community, our state, our country and the world. No understanding of how our life, our existence fits into the whole scope of human history on this planet.
DUMBING DOWN OF AMERICA
But, it hasn’t always been so. There is no doubt that the Founders of our country when they signed the Declaration of Independence pledging their lives and their fortunes and penned the U.S. Constitution establishing a new nation understood how significant their role was in the course of human events.
I won’t belabor the point, but look at today’s office holders and political candidates and ask yourself how many of them have ever stopped to think how they and their actions will be viewed 250 years from now. Not only their words but their priorities would be a lot different if they ever did so.
An educated and informed person today is actually at a disadvantage. Those who play better in the media tend to prevail in elections. Substance is no longer valued.
Celebrities are elevated above subject matter experts virtually each and every time voters go to the polls. That does not bode well.
FUNCTIONAL ILLITERATES
If there are no academic prerequisites for candidates and officeholders, much less is there any requirement to understand the issues before voting. You can walk into the ballot booth and select a straight party ticket. Or you can use no system at all. You don’t even have to know or care what the person believes or stands for or will do if elected.
Even those who are not total functional illiterates can still be electoral illiterates. You only have to read tweets of high-level people to see how little they know about grammar and syntax. But they got where they are because the people who put them there didn’t know any more than they do. It’s really a matter of the blind leading the blind.
SELF INDULGENCE
Back when I was a teenager in the Psychedelic 60’s, spaced out hippies wandered around spouting such phrases as, “If it feels good, do it!” They would smoke grass, drop acid and basically just exist with the muttered motto, “Do your own thing.”
It’s not all that different today. Hedonism is still the predominant social milieu of the masses. To use a little bigger word for it, it’s ethnocentrism.
SUBJECTIVE REALITY
Many people believe that the way they perceive the world is the only way the world can and should be perceived. They believe they have a monopoly on defining the nature of society. That applies not only in America. Both Communist countries and Islamic regimes believe that only their respective definition of social morés is valid even though they differ from one another.
As we proceed with this deep dive into the mechanisms by which people interact with one another, we will see how this plays out in everyday life and in the way we choose those who will lead us going forward … or backward, as the case may be.
SHORT ATTENTION SPANS
I was taught by a wise boss and mentor many decades ago that when you are writing documents for an executive’s signature, both for him/her and for his/her intended audience, put what you really want to happen right up front at the beginning and call it the EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.
By human nature, you will want to build up your case carefully point-by-point and lead to the logical conclusion that you want to be accepted. But, don’t do it that way! You will have lost your audience who may only read the first paragraph because they’re too busy for their own good and not as able to multitask as you are. If they’re interested enough in your conclusion and want to see how you reached it, then they will actually read the complete document. But most won’t.
I seriously doubt that any President, Cabinet member, Senator, Representative, Governor or Mayor regularly reads every document word for word all the way through. That’s what their staff members are for so they can prepare bullet points and briefings. Even if they wanted to, they couldn’t read a 1,000 page document overnight before voting the next day as they are too often called upon to do. It’s the staffers who burn the midnight oil and pull an all-nighter.
Supreme Court Justices probably do pore over every word individually but they compensate by limiting the number of cases that they accept. Writs of Certiorari are issued only for a very limited number of cases.
The general public must also pick and choose what to read and what not. I scan headlines every day but read only those that catch my attention. Sometimes the first couple paragraphs are enough to decide whether to continue to the end of the article. The fact that you are still with us at this point confirms that you are the exception which proves the rule because you really care about substance rather than fluff.
LEMMING MENTALITY
We’ve all seen the pictures of the little animals following their leader over a cliff. I’ll leave this one to your mind’s eye. Don’t follow the leader if the leader is leading you toward your demise.
ANTI-HEROES
The distinction between protagonist and antagonist has been blurred both in real life and in popular fiction during our lifetimes. I may be one of the few people in America who never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones and that do not mourn its last episode having been aired. So you won’t get any analogies here from that.
Back when I was still watching movies as a youngster, in the Westerns the good guy usually wore a white hat and the bad guy a black hat. There was no racial significance to that but today political sensitivities would be aroused.
The point is just that good guys tended to be good and bad guys tended to be bad. Today anti-heroes are bad guys whom we admire and emulate and sometimes elect to national office.
VICARIOUS EXISTENCE
For people working a boring job and living a humdrum existence, it’s exciting to put yourself mentally in the place of the rich and famous and powerful. How many times have you flown on Donald Trump’s luxurious personal aircraft which is even fancier than Air Force One ~ you know, the plane with the gold toilets?
Being a jet-setter and billionaire with a trophy wife has certain perks. One of which would be getting elected as President of the United States with no prior political experience or knowledge of the issues.
Me thinks we won’t see any more Presidents born in a log cabin who studied law in front of the fireplace. There aren’t any Abe Lincolns on the political horizon at the moment. Honest Abe would be hard-pressed to get elected these days anyway.
SECULARISM
It was in a personal letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote about the doctrine of separation of church and state which is not enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. It was not to keep the church out of the state but to keep the state out of the church.
Too many today equate Christianity with interference in government processes whereas impressionable young children are taught about Islam which is put on a pedestal and elevated as a symbol of diversity. This would have absolutely horrified our Founders if they had anticipated such an occurrence.
You are entitled to your beliefs or lack of same. But you have no right to deny them to me or anyone else who holds them dear. A to remain unnamed female Senator from Hawaii has a litmus test that anyone who holds and exercises Christian beliefs will never, never get her confirmation vote for any judgeship. She simply does not understand her responsibilities of advice and consent and that nominees need not agree with her ideologically to be qualified.
ABANDONMENT OF IDEALS
It is no longer fashionable to be an idealist if you happen to disagree with the Democrat talking points that a to remain unnamed male Senator from Hawaii uses exclusively in his inane tweets every day and night.
We need to be able to envision a better America in which the rights of everyone are respected. No more hyper-partisanship. We have to be able to work across the aisle and cooperate on domestic matters for the common good and to present a united front against International foes and enemies.
LACK OF CONTINUITY
Every time we change administrations, particularly from one political party to the other, everything goes out the window. How can we have a strategic plan for national defense, for instance, when the next Congress changes majority party and the next President reverses what his or her predecessor had done?
Just one brief example. When Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi ceased his hostilities, he was sold out, deposed and brutally murdered within his own country. As brutal and vicious as KJU is, ask yourself why he would give up his nukes when a future American President might no longer be willing to make a deal.
How can anybody trust the word of the United States? How can this country be offering a peace plan for the Middle East when politicians in our own national capital are at each other’s throats. That is figurative in most cases but some have actually suggested physical confrontation with Conservatives. I’ll leave that there. You know what I’m getting at.
BORN YESTERDAY ATTITUDE
My grandfather was born in 1867, two years after the end of the Civil War. That was 152 years ago. My father was born in 1916 during World War I, 103 years ago. I’m a baby boomer and septuagenarian. It’s easy for me to look at the scope of history in this country. I learned about the Great Depression and World War II from my parents though they happened before I was born.
Not many kids today have that curiosity and inquisitiveness about bygone eras. New voters in 2020 who turn 18 were born after the terror attacks of 9-11-2001.
Presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard was born several months after Ronald Reagan took office and Iran released American diplomats that they held hostage when Jimmy Carter had no clue what to do. Despite being a Congresswoman and Hawaii National Guard Officer, Major Gabbard is running on an anti-war campaign and accusing President Trump and National Security Advisor John Bolton of warmongering. She apparently trusts Iran over her own Commander-in-Chief and his experts.
AOC was born while Bush 41 was in office so she never saw or heard Ronald Reagan facing down the evil empire and leading to the demise of the Soviet Union. Yet she pontificates about everything under the sun to please her Democrat political handlers.
A person literally born yesterday will turn 18 and be able to vote after 2037 when Chelsea Clinton will be President. Sorry, bad joke. I hope it’s just a joke.
PROVINCIALISM
This is a term we often hear from folks around the world about Americans. Unfortunately, it’s basically true. If we hear that there was a massacre in New Zealand or in Sri Lanka, the first thing American media want to know is were any Americans killed or injured. It’s a natural reaction. But black Africans in Nigeria are being subjected to a genocide by Muslims from their own country. The world just yawns.
People born and raised in the United States are less likely to learn foreign languages, particularly multiple foreign languages unless they travel overseas for business or pleasure a lot. In many countries in Europe and Asia, it’s quite typical to speak many dialects.
LIFE IN A GOLDFISH BOWL
We tend to feel like our own limited sphere of influence is all that matters. We don’t really look outside our own little goldfish bowl. We don’t interact with the other fish let alone the turtles in the aquarium across the room.
INCAPABLE OF ABSTRACT THOUGHT
Unless you have sat for hours on a mountaintop taking in the endless vistas or stood and looked up at the night sky and sensed the infinity of the universe, it may be hard to relate to things that exist beyond our own physical environment. We get caught up in dealing with how to earn a living and provide for our family. What will we eat today? Where will we go on an outing this weekend? How soon can we make that next extended vacation? But why are we here and how will the world be different because we were here are not things that people normally contemplate.
NO OBSERVER SELF
Did you ever get into an argument with someone and sense in the back of your mind something telling you that you shouldn’t be doing that? Sometimes it’s portrayed as a good angel or a bad angel sitting on our shoulder whispering in one ear or the other. But in psychology, we learn the concept of stepping outside of ourselves and observing objectively what we’re doing. Then we can change course if necessary.
LACK OF ETHICS
Whether it be teleological ethics in which the end justifies the means or deontological ethics in which things are either right or wrong in and of themselves, all too often people just do what they feel like doing and don’t really think about whether they should be doing them or not. Being a philosopher is an admirable calling if one can sustain oneself without starving to death in the process. But one needs to have a serious philosophy of what life is all about.
WITHOUT INTEGRITY
What do you do when you think nobody is looking or listening? Is your decision-making factor whether you can get away with something or not? Do you do what is right because it is right and avoid what is wrong because it is wrong? How you answer these questions will tell you whether you have integrity. Others will already know whether you do or not.
POLARIZATION
Teams are forming. Progressives are on the left. Conservatives are on the right. Labels are used to brand people so that their views on individual issues can be presumed either correctly or erroneously.
Stereotypes are rampant as when somebody once told me in social media that because I’m a conservative, I’m obviously a balding 59-year-old Caucasian male who should instantly leave Hawaii and go back home to Alabama. The guy who said that lives in San Francisco where pooping on the sidewalk is totally acceptable.
DEMONIZATION OF OPPONENTS
We have gotten to the point in America where it’s no longer acceptable to respect others who have differing opinions. We can no longer just agree to disagree and still like each other. Those who do not have the facts on their side rely upon attacking the messenger to avoid dealing with the actual message. Politically, people are migrating toward either the North Pole or the South Pole and evacuating the Equator.
DISRESPECT FOR U.S. CONSTITUTION
In the not-so-distant past, the Constitution was the arbiter. Either something is Constitutional or it isn’t. Now some Progressives are ready, willing and prepared to turn America into just another Banana Republic by dispensing with the Constitution that has withstood 230 years of our history. They call it anachronistic. Imagine a football game with no rules and no referees. Without a standard to which all agree, there is anarchy.
ME, ME, ME
This category is self-explanatory.
NORMALIZING ABERRATIONS
Most of today’s Progressive politicians not that long ago were on board with the understanding that marriage is a sacred union between one man and one woman. You can find the videos on YouTube easily enough.
Obama kept his threat to fundamentally transform America into a country unrecognizable by any standards of decency. Now his successors want to make his re-engineering of society the norm. They have hand-picked judges who will overrule any Executive Order aimed at correcting our previous President’s abuses.
MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY
Live and Let Live no longer applies. Either you do what I want in the way I want you to do it or you have no right to exist. That is the platform of the Democrat Party in a nutshell. If they retake the Oval Office and both houses of Congress in 2020, you ain’t seen nothing yet compared to the persecution which lies ahead.
PSYCHOSIS
A person on LSD can have his or her senses so distorted that they do not experience the reality around them. There is also a growing political psychosis in which all contact with the real world is likewise severed.
When you hear somebody say some women have penises and some men have vaginas, that is nothing short of stark-raving mad. Gender is immutable and cannot be redefined at will. What one wants to be is not necessarily what is.
Thinking that feelings overrule anatomy is insane. This is only one example of the mental abyss into which America has fallen.

SECOND CIVIL WAR
If gender dysphoria were the only abnormality we had to deal with, perhaps this country could go on and remain intact. But it is oh so much more than that!
The left is intent on forcing their will upon us Conservatives no matter what the cost. They’re trying to undermine the Electoral College with the so-called National Popular Vote which would disenfranchise voters in red states by throwing away their ballots and awarding their votes to the winners in blue urban districts. This in-your-face approach is on the brink of tearing America apart at the seams again.
If they insist on ignoring our voices and imposing their own perverted policies, we will never reach a reconciliation. That’s why we are on the verge of a national calamity. Either Democrats come back to the table and bargain as co-equals or they are going to bear full responsibility for destroying the greatest country in the history of the world.
RECONSTRUCTION
The decades after the first Civil War were difficult. Americans had to learn how to get along with one another again. They had to focus on common values which draw people together.
It would have been so much better if they could have done that before hostilities began with the firing on Fort Sumter in 1861. In retrospect, that did not have to happen.
I implore the Democrat Party to come to your senses. This is your country but it is our country too. We can take turns leading the government. But you have to accept the fact when you lose elections that you are out of power.
If you persist in demanding your own way 100% of the time, America will be nothing more than a fond memory for those old enough to remember when we were all patriots who put country first before our own ambitions.
