If anyone needs proof the sanctions against Iran are working, one need only talk to the nearest Hezbollah leader. The terrorist group is so strapped for cash, they’re putting out donation boxes to fund their efforts according to newly declassified information on Iran’s finances.
A report by Fox Business covered the declassified information last week, noting Iran has communicated to their military and terror proxies that they need to start finding alternative sources of revenue. Iran, which is coming off recent windfalls in cash during the Obama era, are now finding it harder and harder to support their region-controlling ambitions. Meanwhile, their people continue to suffer, having not seen much of the cash that went Iran’s way in recent years.
Hamas has even begun looking into “austerity plans” to compensate for the lost revenue from Iran.
“When people talk about Iran’s regional aggression, their talking about Iran’s support for its proxies – Hamas, Hezbollah, Shia militias in Iraq and Syria, and the Houthis in Yemen,” said Brian Hook, U.S. Special Representative for Iran and Senior Policy Advisor to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “We are making it harder for all of these terrorist organization to operate and destabilize the Middle East.”
The U.S. withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Agreement and reinstatement of sanctions against the Middle East nation have pushed Iran to take drastic measures. They are pressuring Europe to somehow shield them from the sanctions under threat of restarting their nuclear weapons program. Some American and Israeli officials say the program was never actually stopped but simply moved from view of the United Nations.
Last month, the defection of Brigadier General Ali Nasiri likely prompted the recent increase in our military presence in the region. Threats of attacks by Iran’s proxies against American interests were likely discovered in the cache of intelligence the defector brought with him to the U.S. Embassy.
As rumors of war continue to beat, it’s encouraging to learn Iran’s ability to fund terrorism has been greatly hampered. They may be getting pushed into a corner, but the alternative brings us no closer to peace.
