The recent wave of wildfires across Israel were initially blamed on the scorching heat with temperatures reaching between 40 and 49 degrees Celsius (104-120 Fahrenheit). But as the flames are being put out and investigators are taking a closer look, an increasing number of the 1700 wildfires since Thursday are being blamed on arson and firebombs floated over to Israel from the Gaza Strip.
One of the most damaging fires that started in the Ben Shemen forest in central Israel which burned down the Mevo Modi’in community claiming forty of the fifty homes there, is now being suspected as arson.
Fire that destroyed Shlomo Carlebach moshav is suspected arson
Israel’s Fire and Rescue Service initially blamed the blaze on faulty electric wires, but has since discovered that it had several points of origin, suggesting arson, according to media reports.
Forty of the 50 homes that make up the community were burned down, as were 10 homes in the adjacent community of Kibbutz Harel.
Israel, always careful about having clear evidence before laying down accusations against others, has come just short of blaming the fires on Palestinians or regional Arabs, but the increase in firebombs being floated over the border with Gaza has clearly been part of the problem. With strong winds and extremely dry conditions, the formula is ripe for wildfires to be started. To have 1700 fires in an area the size of New Jersey is almost certainly the work of men and not just coincidence or crazy weather.
The international community has sent support to help bring the fires under control with airships, men, and supplies sent from Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Croatia.
The fires have been hitting in residential areas, prompting more suspicions of arson.
Fire Storms Rage Through Israel
Some 3,500 people were evacuated from towns and dozens of homes were destroyed during the heights of the blazes as brushfires raged nationwide. On Saturday, a toddler was killed and 14 people injured when a fire broke out in an apartment building in Safed, including the four-year-old brother of the toddler.
Fires blazed around Jerusalem, along the Jordan Valley, as far north as Safed and in Arab communities in Judea and Samaria. An electrical fault is believed to be the reason for at least one of the fires.
Once the smoke has cleared, investigators will be able to have a better understanding of how the fires started. Weather conditions have been a big problem, but it seems increasingly likely Israel’s enemies played a role in the devastation.
