Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson informed lawmakers that he believed President Trump was less prepared than Russian President Vladimir Putin when they met in Germany. Now, the President has struck back with insults for his former chief diplomat.
“We spent a lot of time in the conversation talking about how Putin seized every opportunity to push what he wanted,” a House Foreign Affairs Committee aide told the Washington Post. “There was a discrepancy in preparation, and it created an unequal footing.”
The President’s response went after Tillerson’s intelligence:
Rex Tillerson, a man who is “dumb as a rock” and totally ill prepared and ill equipped to be Secretary of State, made up a story (he got fired) that I was out-prepared by Vladimir Putin at a meeting in Hamburg, Germany. I don’t think Putin would agree. Look how the U.S. is doing!

Nobody who wasn’t there can know for sure what happened, but the President makes an important point with his insults. Tillerson did essentially nothing as Secretary of State. Those who think he was held back by the President need only look at how much current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has accomplished in much less time. It’s like night and day.
It’s hard to believe Tillerson at this point. He’s been critical of the President since before he was fired. Stories of his inability to cope with the pressures of his job abound. And, as the President noted, we’re doing well.
