Is Justin Amash running for president as a Libertarian in 2020

Speculation has been rampant for months about Representative Justin Amash’s plans for 2020. The Libertarian with the Republican (R) next to his name for election purposes has been critical of his own party’s actions, especially when it comes to spending and military adventurism. Now, he’s taken a step all the way to the point of no return by condemning the President as well as Attorney General William Barr.

He’s even supporting impeachment.

To me, these do not sound like the words of someone about to run for president. It sounds more like the rallying cry of someone who knows their cause is fruitless but who is unwilling to fight the cause from within their current place in government. There are plenty of issues he could have with the GOP and President Trump, from high budgets and massive spending to failures on so many important issues like North Korea, Obamacare repeal, and gun owner rights.

In other words, this sounds to me like someone who’s throwing in the towel, not throwing his hat into the ring.

Predictably, the President’s supporters were outraged on Twitter:

The only thing that leads me to believe he really may be considering a run, other than the fact that he has never said he won’t run, is the timing of the Tweets. There’s only one reason to make the news on a Saturday afternoon: to become a point of discussion for Sunday morning political shows. If he wants this to be talked about, then either he really wants the futile effort of impeachment to move forward or he’s seriously considering running for president.

Keep a close eye on him. He’s the justification many #NeverTrump conservatives and Libertarians may need to give them someone other than Bill Weld to support. He likely isn’t a real threat to the President, but could be a disruption.

July is Gun Pride Month, the annual celebration of the 2nd Amendment

July is Gun Pride Month the annual celebration of the 2nd Amendment

Announcing the second annual celebration of the 2nd amendment and the gear that protects our lives and our liberty.

Gun Pride Month is the annual celebration of the life-saving tools of freedom. It’s that time of year when those of the pro-liberty right, liberals, conservatives and Libertarians, come out to show their pride in the kit that protects our lives and liberty. It is the second year of a celebration that is growing by leaps and bounds.

Never Forget, even for an instant, that the one and only reason anybody has for taking your gun away is to make you weaker than he is, so he can do something to you that you wouldn’t allow him to do if you were equipped to prevent it. This goes for burglars, muggers, and rapists, and even more so for policemen, bureaucrats, and politicians. – L. Neil Smith

Standing for the common sense human right of self-defense

Leftists love the divide and conquer approach in attacking liberty. What began with the ‘first they came for the gun owners’ morphed into other targets of the national socialist left. This is why we the patriots of the pro-liberty right must band together and refuse to be silenced by the mobocracy of the left.

Other groups of people have claimed whole months, so why shouldn’t the over 120 million innocent gun owners do the same? This is to show the liberty grabber left that we will not be shamed into silence on social media. We are the armed patriots of America and we aren’t going anywhere, so the nation’s socialist-left had better get used to that fact.

As Tom Knighton of Bearing Arms stated it in his article on the celebration: Make July ‘Gun Pride’ Month!

Gun control activists are lashing out, trying to create a world where gun ownership is socially taboo. They want us silent because if people know we exist, they might be interested in our thoughts on gun control. They might seek us out and get facts about guns and how they’re used for self-defense 2.5 million times per year, a number supported by CDC research.

Not only that, but we get to spend the month of Independence Day celebrating the ultimate proof that we are truly independent. Let’s start showing our support for gun rights by using the hashtag #GunPrideMonth on pictures of us using our firearms responsibly posted to social media. Let’s start printing t-shirts and posters. Let’s come up with new ideas to remind people that we’re gun owners and we’re Americans, for crying out loud!

Guns are the linchpin of liberty

Guns are the only physical manifestation of the Bill of Rights. Without the government-restraining right of firearm ownership, the Constitution is only a piece of paper to be ignored by those who lust for power. Authoritarian socialist regimes of the past and present have also had Constitutions or other foundational documents that purported to protect human and civil rights. But, without the basic human right of self-defense, those rights were meaningless.

It’s no coincidence that the liberty grabber left’s first attempts at censorship began with the subject of the self-defense. What began with the banning of a few 2nd amendment, pro-liberty channels and pages has expanded to other voices. As has always been the case, the left and its socialist national agenda of societal slavery has always been inferior to the agenda of economic liberty and freedom of the conservative right.

The left has a fever, and the only prescription is more gun confiscation

Guns put the teeth in the Bill of Rights, a restraint the power-hungry can’t ignore. This is why we have created this celebration and why it is catching fire among the patriot community. The plain fact is the liberty grabber left cannot abide the ability of the people to ‘resist’ a governmental monopoly on the use of force. As is the case in other realms, they cannot be honest as to why they want certain people to be disarmed. Hence, they have to couch their obsession with stepping-stones to gun confiscation ‘Intergalactic Background Checks’ etc. in terms of ‘safety’ or reform.

We’ve already documented and detailed what is just a sampling of the instances where the national socialist left has demanded gun confiscation. It used to be that the left would only make these strident demands against liberty in the context of a mass murder tragedy, but now they have lowered to bar to calling for this from the mere rumor of the report of something happening of this nature.

The Takeaway

It is patently absurd to collectively punish millions people for the crimes of a few. Is it fair to treat certain people as second class citizens simply because they have certain items of hardware? That is the flawed injustice of the left in going after the basic human rights of innocent gun owners.

It is time for the 120+ million innocent gun owners to stand up and be counted. The liberty grabber left has made it clear they want to punish millions with a never ending stream of new regulations and requirements that will do nothing except punish the innocent, followed by outright gun confiscation. It is time to show our pride in defending liberty and saving lives in the process.

The House Freedom Caucus is better without Justin Amash

The House Freedom Caucus is better without Justin Amash

I recently had the pleasure of lunching with House Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows. We discussed the future of the conservative movement and specifically how 3rd parties can play a role in that future. We didn’t discuss Representative Justin Amash specifically, but the general sentiment was that third parties could be effective at rallying a small group of “in-betweeners” who shared views with traditional conservatives. But there was a caveat.

One important distinction needs to be made. “In-betweeners” are not necessarily moderates. They can be, but oftentimes they are quite extreme with their views, though not necessarily falling in line with one side or the other. For example, Amash is adamant about limiting government and cutting spending, aligning nicely with the stated Republican goals. But he’s also adamant about open borders and increasing the rights of illegal immigrants, aligning with the Democrats.

Even if we set aside his recent attacks on President Trump and the possibility that he will run for President as a Libertarian, we should consider his border views as antithetical of what the House Freedom Caucus represents. It’s the most pro-American caucus in the House of Representatives. Members get two “passes,” according to Meadows, to allow them to rarely vote against the caucus if it behooves them or their district to do so. This makes sense; we are not electing representatives to do the will of a caucus but rather the will of the people they represent. Thankfully, the Freedom Caucus generally sides with the fundamental principles conservatives demand when we cast our votes.

Amash is quite conservative on most issues, but where his views differ are not inconsequential. We must have strong borders. We must have a differentiation between those who come into our county legally and those who bypass our legal system in an attempt to steal our sovereignty. As noted earlier, 90% of recent asylum seekers do not even show up for their hearing. Why should these people, who have broken at least two laws in the first few months of their American experience, be given driver’s licences, jobs, and the right to vote? Amash wants these things for them.

Personally, I like Amash. I agree with his perspectives the vast majority of the time. He’s been one of the most consistent limited-government voices in DC. And I don’t fault him for breaking from the tribe even though I disagree with his reasoning. He’s doing and saying what he believes to be true, so for that he should be commended.

But…

The future of the American Conservative Movement is based partially on a belief that illegal immigration is a huge problem. Amash is opposed to this truth, so he doesn’t belong in the House Freedom Caucus.

Glenn Beck calls on Justin Amash to run… in 2024

Glenn Beck calls on Justin Amash to run in 2024

Former NeverTrumper turned MAGA-hat minstrel Glenn Beck made a brave yet confusing statement today on Twitter. On one hand, he praised Representative Justin Amash for a Tweet affirming his commitment to defend the Constitution while not catering to any party (GOP) or person (President Trump). On the other hand, he called on him to run for President… in 2024.

Many Republicans have attacked Amash for being the lone Republican in Congress calling for impeachment of the President. He has become anathema to the MAGA crowd while becoming an instant hero to both NeverTrump Republicans and anti-GOP Libertarians. And both groups have been calling on him to run for President in 2020, either as a Republican primary candidate or as a straight Libertarian.

Beck has been the punching bag for both sides of the Trump coin since the 2016 primaries. First, he was a heralded supporter of Senator Ted Cruz before Cruz dropped out and eventually endorsed Trump, drawing the ire of the MAGA crowd. But then his recent shift to supporting the President was seen as a betrayal by the NeverTrumpers. His recent actions may be seen as a way of testing the waters to see if the NeverTrumpers will let him back in the club, as he was never fully embraced by the MAGA crowd.

Here’s his Tweet:

I can appreciate Beck’s position, as I was once a NeverTrumper. But I’ve learned over the last two years that the things I don’t like about the President are either superficial or fall under the category of “damage has been done.” For example, I am a free-trade capitalist who does not like tariffs, but now that we’re here I’ve switched tunes to say we must go all out on these trade wars if we have any chance of returning to free trade principles sooner rather than later.

But Beck has to realize it’s important to pick a side and stick with it. If his intention was to praise Amash while simultaneously push him to put aside any ambitions he has for the White House in 2020, then the Tweet makes sense. But if he’s really trying to push him to run against the President now, he should just come out and say it. I am not a fan of playing both sides of the aisle. I’ve chosen to support the President because the current viable alternatives on the other side of the aisle are exponentially worse and represent a real existential threat to America.

Personally, I respect Amash and believe he is taking the right stance based on his beliefs. Of course, I also believe impeachment in the near future would benefit the President more than it would hurt him, so perhaps my perspectives would be different if I thought Amash was a real threat. His conservative bona fides are only hampered by his endorsement of open borders and voting rights for illegal immigrants. Otherwise, he’s a liberty-loving conservative.

If Beck is going to try to fit a MAGA hat and a NeverTrump hat on the same head, he’ll soon realize it doesn’t work. Better to simply pick a side and use full measures. Amash has picked his side. Beck needs to get off the fence.
