Is Justin Amash running for president as a Libertarian in 2020

Speculation has been rampant for months about Representative Justin Amash’s plans for 2020. The Libertarian with the Republican (R) next to his name for election purposes has been critical of his own party’s actions, especially when it comes to spending and military adventurism. Now, he’s taken a step all the way to the point of no return by condemning the President as well as Attorney General William Barr.

He’s even supporting impeachment.

To me, these do not sound like the words of someone about to run for president. It sounds more like the rallying cry of someone who knows their cause is fruitless but who is unwilling to fight the cause from within their current place in government. There are plenty of issues he could have with the GOP and President Trump, from high budgets and massive spending to failures on so many important issues like North Korea, Obamacare repeal, and gun owner rights.

In other words, this sounds to me like someone who’s throwing in the towel, not throwing his hat into the ring.

Predictably, the President’s supporters were outraged on Twitter:

The only thing that leads me to believe he really may be considering a run, other than the fact that he has never said he won’t run, is the timing of the Tweets. There’s only one reason to make the news on a Saturday afternoon: to become a point of discussion for Sunday morning political shows. If he wants this to be talked about, then either he really wants the futile effort of impeachment to move forward or he’s seriously considering running for president.

Keep a close eye on him. He’s the justification many #NeverTrump conservatives and Libertarians may need to give them someone other than Bill Weld to support. He likely isn’t a real threat to the President, but could be a disruption.

Are things really as bad as the media would have us believe?

Are things really as bad as the media would have us believe

The short answer is, “No.”

The longer answer was tackled by Reason.com editor-in-chief Katherine Mangu-Ward and John Stossel. Fear sells when it comes to mainstream media and progressive politics. They need a populace who believes things are getting worse in order to promote their agenda of authoritarian policies that will allegedly make things better.

“Fearmongering” is often invoked by the left to condemn the right, but in reality the left have been so adept at fearmongering that we have an entire generation who believe the world is going to end if we keep eating meat. They believe the economy is bad even though every economic indicator is great. They believe we need to be told how to live by our government instead of being allowed to live freely in an open and responsible society.

Whenever you’re told by the mainstream media how unhappy you are, question it. They don’t know. They have an agenda to push and a narrative to sell. Otherwise, they’d report the truth that things aren’t bad and are getting better.

A reminder to gun control advocates on the left and right, from Thomas Massie

A reminder to gun control advocates on the left and right, from Thomas Massie

Gun control is the talk of the town in Washington DC these days as nearly every politician on the left is being joined by their moderate cohorts on the right to trumpet various means of ending gun violence. They put these forth as solutions, but in doing so they’re addressing the wrong problems.

They’re doing this with the knowledge that universal background checks would have stopped literally zero mass shootings that have happened in the United States in recent decades. They do this knowing red flag gun laws circumvent due process with a presumption of guilt until the victim can prove themselves innocent. Many, including last night’s Democratic debaters, believe taking away “weapons of war” from tens or even hundreds of thousands of law abiding gun owners is an appropriate response to the handful of criminals and mentally ill people who use them to kill randomly.

Somewhere along the lines, the authoritarian left found a way through mass media indoctrination and subversion of common sense to convince most Democrats and many Republicans that guns are the problem with gun violence. They need this to be the case in their quest to disarm America because focusing on criminals and the mentally ill doesn’t fulfill their scope. They aren’t proposing laws that will fight against people who disobey laws. They’re proposing laws that will prevent people from defending themselves against these criminals, as well as against an increasingly oppressive government with a party whose leaders openly advocate principles of Marxism.

This is advocating for violence. Any time you prevent a person from defending themselves, you’re actively engaged in assaulting that person when violence comes their way. Representative Thomas Massie said it better:

The 2nd Amendment was created to prevent government from taking away our unalienable right to life. There are criminals, mentally ill people, and Marxists who want to take our lives. Only the 2nd Amendment stands in their way.

Liberty was missing at the Democrats’ debate

Liberty was missing at the Democrats debate

Once again the Left shows they are aren’t actually Liberal.

You would think that people who call themselves Liberals would be advocates of Liberty, but in the case of the Left, you would be wrong. Despite their incessant and infuriating use of false labelling, Leftists still like to praise themselves as being Liberal or progressive. They are neither since their base ideology is antithetical to both.

Andrew Klavan of Daily Wire fame noticed that despite their deceptive labelling, the Democrats at the Debates failed to keep this very important concept in mind in their quest to rule over everyone else. It’s almost as if the Authoritarian Socialist Left will say anything to gain power.

“The champions of socialism call themselves progressives, but they recommend a system which is characterized by rigid observance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improvement.

They call themselves liberals, but they are intent upon abolishing liberty.

They call themselves democrats, but they yearn for dictatorship.

They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the government omnipotent.

They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden, but they plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office. Every man but one a subordinate clerk in a bureau. What an alluring utopia! What a noble cause to fight!”
Ludwig von Mises
