If 2016 was the year candidate Trump brought illegal immigration to the forefront, 2020 is going to be the year he’s going to round it off with legal immigration reform. The plan that he’s unveiling today will focus on how to change the immigration system to better serve America instead of the current lottery system that rewards luck.
Don’t expect the President to back down at all on the campaign trail about building the wall or improving border security. But this plan will give him a fresh talking point for one important reason: It has zero chance of passing with Democrats in control of the House.
This is a campaign play, 100%. And it’s a great one.
While everyone in the media seems focused on the merit-based system, the real hook for conservatives and moderates alike will be the “patriotic assimilation” portion of the plan. We don’t just want people to come into the country because they’re qualified. We want them to come into this country legally and become active, patriotic, English-speaking Americans. It’s something that is much more widely appreciated than anyone in the press gives credit to because it’s not something that translates well in polls. It’s slightly controversial, but mixed in with extremely controversial subjects, it doesn’t really register on the media’s radar.
It does, however, resonate on many Americans’ radars.
The GOP mantra for 2020 will focus on stopping illegal immigration and improving legal immigration. It’s a winning message that might do more than secure the White House. It may bring the House back to the GOP as well.
