8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
This is a tricky one to discuss because it can be ever so slightly misleading. Nothing is untrue about the passage: nothing we can do on our own can save us except for accepting the grace that God has offered us by having faith and accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
The misleading part comes into the way that men interpret it. They often use these two verses as excuses for saying that “works” are no longer important. This is not true. Paul did not preach that we are justified to sin because we have Yeshua but that we should strive to not sin because of Him. We cannot earn our place in heaven, but that is not a license to seek sins, nor is it a justification for sinning. The commitment to believe in Yeshua as our Lord and Savior means that we must, in our flawed state, strive to fight against the temptation to sin. Otherwise, the judgment at the end will be for naught.
