Former Vice President Joe Biden is currently in the driver’s seat for the Democratic nomination for president. This has the far-left progressives steaming as they scurry around in a clown car loaded with candidates espousing their views but who are not able to distinguish themselves from one another. Meanwhile, Biden stands alone as the only “moderate” in the race.
But there’s a problem. Nearly everything that Biden is proposing could have been written by the Obama administration. His politics are much closer to those of President Obama than anyone else in the crowd, leaving progressives with the unenviable task of taking he vaunted hero of the Democratic Party and turning him into the enemy.
How do you tear down a hero’s clone without tearing down the hero himself?
From a fundraising perspective, they don’t really have a lot of options. Most of the big donors who supported Obama will be more inclined to support Biden, and while Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has an army of small donors to keep him afloat, the others are having trouble making a real impact. Part of their problem is the unwillingness of donors to give to campaigns that don’t seem likely to win, which is everyone other than Biden and perhaps Sanders. Those nearest the top two – Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Beto O’Rourke, and Mayor Pete Buttigieg – are still trying to convince donors they can get into the mix with enough delegates to make a run.
At some point, one of them is going to have to come out and say, “Obama was wrong.” They’re going to have to say he was wrong to abandon single-payer with the consolation prize of Obamacare. They’re going to have to acknowledge that his economic policies were too capitalistic. They’ll have to acknowledge his weakness on the environment despite his signing of the worthless Paris climate accords.
In other words, they’re going to have to throw him under the bus if they’re going to be able to take Biden down.
But it’s as risky of a move as it is promising. Yes, it may be able to take down Biden, but the messenger of the bad news about Obama may not be the beneficiary of the prize. Such actions will likely push someone else into the light, which is why it won’t be Sanders doing the trash-talking against the Democrats’ former messiah. Harris won’t do it. Despite trying to seem like a far-left progressive, her policies are actually closer to Biden’s than she’ll ever admit. It doesn’t behoove Buttigieg to do it because his whole shtick revolves around being liked. O’Rourke doesn’t have the spine or position to do it.
That leaves Warren. She may not be able to get enough traction to win the nomination, but she may be able to help Sanders overtake Biden if she goes on the offensive. It suits her, and it might even land her the VP nod.
But in reality, nobody’s going to do it. There would be too much blowback for the rest of their careers if they denounce the chosen one.
Since nobody will have to guts to call out the Democrats’ favorite president of all time, they’re going to have to tiptoe around Biden’s clear adherence to Obamaism. This means he’s probably going to get the nomination easily.
