The responsibility of apologetics falls on all believers of the Bible to some extent. Even if we’re not hitting street corners preaching the Gospel or debating an atheist in a college auditorium, we are charged to spread the Word to all the nations. Sometimes, that means talking to our friends or giving a reason for the hope within us to our family. Sometimes, it means making a movie.
Ray Comfort has been spreading the Gospel across the globe for decades. He was met with a major roadblock when he was clowned for being “Banana Man.” A long-used bit he’d been doing since his early days as a street evangelist in New Zealand was latched onto by atheists. In it, Comfort spoke of the wonderful way bananas were created as food for mankind. Atheists contended the banana had been cultivated over time to the form it’s in now and claimed Comfort’s attempts to demonstrate Creation only worked to reinforce evolution and man’s own ingenuity.
It was devastating for a time. Comfort’s ministry took a hit in credibility. Comfort himself had to endure mocking and ridicule. It was a humbling experience, one that had a wonderful silver lining.
What Comfort realized and speaks about in this movie is that pride itself was the only thing that could prevent him from seeing the opportunity his foible had created. After the “Banana Man” moniker took hold, those who are militantly opposed to the Gospel would invite him to debate. They’d share his work in a mocking sense, but by doing so they often exposed their audiences to the Gospel.
It’s a great story that shows sometimes we must be humbled in order to do the work of our Lord. Ray Comfort continues to reach the masses and this video is just another way for that to happen.
