The fire occurred at the Marwani Prayer Room located underneath the southeastern corner of the Temple Mount. Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, director general of the Jerusalem Waqf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, told Jordan’s Al-Mamlaka TV that the fire broke out in the courtyard. Reports indicate children are believed to have inadvertently started the fire. It was extinguished quickly by the local fire department.
Even though the fire was contained quickly, it’s significant that two of the most revered religious buildings in the world were on fire at the same time.
