A group of conservatives sent a letter to President Trump urging him to nominate Ken Cuccinelli to lead DHS. Among those supporting him are Jim DeMint, Ginni Thomas, and Brent Bozell.
But not all conservatives are excited about the pick. Cuccinelli was an outspoken opponent to Donald Trump’s nomination in 2016, leading the group who wanted to free the delegates to allow Senator Ted Cruz to get the nomination instead. He famously tossed down his RNC credentials when it was clear they were not going to be heard.
A staunch border hawk, Cuccinelli has made many friends and enemies along the way. One important enemy is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who Cuccinelli has opposed for years.
Quin Hi’lyer at Washington Examiner explained why he believes Cuccinelli is the man for the job.
Among the signatories were former Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, former U.S. senator and Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint, longtime conservative publisher Al Regnery, pioneering direct-mail impresario Richard Viguerie, Leadership Institute President Morton Blackwell (no relation to Kenneth), Ronald Reagan biographer Craig Shirley, and leading conservative lawyer Cleta Mitchell.
They closed the letter extolling Cuccinelli’s “tough on crime stance, his solution-oriented approach, his dedication to the rule of law, his love for America, and most importantly, his loyalty to the cause of making America great again.”
In conversations and interviews both on and off the record over the years, I’ve been equally impressed. If Trump wants a smart, take-charge guy to protect the American homeland, Cuccinelli should be his man.
I like Cuccinelli, but I’m biased. I was with him trying to get Cruz nominated, but like Cuccinelli, I’ve grown to accept and even occasionally appreciate the President.
Is he a border hawk as some are saying? Yes. Is he the right guy for the job? Perhaps. I also like Kris Kobach, though that seems less and less likely. I’m not crazy about Pam Bondi or Rick Perry getting the job.
DHS is arguably the most important department right now when it comes to needing strong leadership. Admittedly, I haven’t heard a name floated that really gets me excited, not even Cuccinelli or Kobach. But then again, I can’t thing of a name that hasn’t been floated that would get me excited either other than perhaps Allen West.
“I’ve not spoken to him about any of them. I have expressed my, shall I say, lack of enthusiasm for one of them… Ken Cuccinelli.” – Mitch McConnell
Whoever the President nominates for the position, they must be willing to do what it takes to slow or even stop the intense flow of illegal immigrants at our southern border. We cannot continue to be weak on border security.
