Reports came in yesterday that President Trump would designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran’s elite military division, as a terrorist organization. This would be the first time a state’s military forces were given such a designation by the United States and would put them alongside the Islamic State, al Qaeda, and Hamas.
Iran has responded by saying the United States does so, they will do the same thing with their own designation of U.S. forces as terrorists.

Critics of the move, including some in the administration, believe this is a symbolic move that will end up doing more harm than good. But that’s assuming someday we’ll be negotiating with Iran, and frankly that’s not going to happen unless we get another Obamaesque person sitting in the Oval Office.
This isn’t the force that Iran uses to defend its borders or protect its interests. This is the military unit Iran calls into action when they need their will exerted somewhere in or out of their country. They are prevalent in Syria right now as part of the persecution being committed on those who oppose Bashar al-Assad’s regime. They’ve been the head of the spear for Iran whenever they needed action in Iraq, Yemen, or Qatar.
These men have one purpose: spreading fear and harming those who don’t comply. They are, by definition, a terrorist organization.
“A formal designation and its consequences may be new, but these IRGC butchers have been terrorists for a long time.” – Senator Ben Sasse
It is hard to argue that the IRGC is not a terrorist organization. The fact that it’s under direct control of Iran’s religious leadership doesn’t justify their heinous acts. This is a good move, one that is long overdue.
