Motel 6 gave names of former guests to their hotels over to ICE agents from 2015-2017. The names given were “Latino-sounding” and helped ICE apprehend illegal immigrants.
Washington state reached a settlement with the company for $12 million, which is on top of another settlement reached in November with former guests to pay $7.6 million.
I see a lot of people Tweeting that Motel 6 was doing the right thing. Sorry folks, but no. This is wrong. Giving over "Latino-sounding" names is not the way to handle our illegal immigration problem. American citizens had their privacy encroached upon. https://t.co/PPLHGW0Sac

Opinion
I’m seeing a lot of conservatives weighing in on this one by claiming Motel 6 was doing the right thing by helping ICE. Nope. This is not the way we handle our illegal immigration problem. We can’t let companies to invade the privacy of American citizens by handing over names of people who sound like they might be illegal immigrants just because they have Latino names. Over 80,000 names given, which means the vast majority of those who had their their privacy invaded were American citizens.
I am adamantly opposed to illegal immigration and I believe in using every measure possible to fight the problem as long as it remains legal and does not harm American citizens in the process. That means we do not lump in anyone who appears to be Latino based on their name, looks, or habits. It’s incumbent on law enforcement to do the work required to apprehend those in the country illegally. If the data transfer were reversed, that would be fair game. All ICE had to do was work with Motel 6 by giving them the names to people on their illegal immigrant list to cross-reference against the entire Motel 6 database. Instead, they took private information from American citizens and illegal immigrants alike. That’s not the right way to do this.
Just as the Patriot Act went way too far in the government’s efforts to safeguard us against terrorist attacks, so too is this a step in the wrong direction in fighting illegal immigration. When we do not step forward and defend our own freedoms as well as the liberties granted to other American citizens, we’re going down the leftist road of authoritarian control. The ends do not always justify the means and in this case, the means represented a breach of privacy every American citizen is entitled to have regardless of their name.

Final Thoughts
In our quest of apprehending illegal immigrants, we must keep the privacy of American citizens in mind. It’s easy to say, “If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.” Instead we should be saying, “Stay out of our private lives.”
