You’ve probably heard this joke before, but how do you know if a politician is lying? Answer: his or her lips are moving. An appropriate response, but when it comes to Trump and the GOP, the answer could also be it’s election season.
Republicans have had varying degrees of control of the Congress and the White House over the past 8 years, yet with all that power, they have exploded the national debt, failed to repeal Obamacare, failed to defund Planned Parenthood, failed to fix immigration … well, you get the idea.
Now, to be fair, they have succeeded in a few areas. They’ve succeeded in dismantling the Second Amendment by banning bump stocks and by advancing Red Flag laws, succeeded in increasing Planned Parenthood funding … so it hasn’t been all failure.
You’d think that with such a dismal track record, Republicans could at least come up with a few new lies for the voters. But I guess they’re of the mind that it’s best to dance with the one who brung ya!
So, prepare yourself for a 2016 Redux because if you liked the lies Republicans told you in 2016, you’re going to love their 2020 campaign.
Though there are many more examples, here are just a few of the recent lowlights in no particular order. Note: the word promise is where you’ll find the lie.
- Federal deficit. In 2016, Trump and the GOP promised to reduce the deficit and Trump promised to pay off the national debt in 8 years. Despite record-breaking deficit spending, they are again promising to reduce spending and balance the budget, this time in 10 years.
- Abortion. In 2016, the GOP platform was heralded as the most pro-life platform in history, where Planned Parenthood would be defunded and unborn babies defended. Despite increasing Planned Parenthood funding and doing nothing more than hold sham votes to end late-term abortions, Trump and the GOP are again promising to defund Planned Parenthood and to fight for life despite never doing so while fully controlling Washington.
- Obamacare. Perhaps the granddaddy of all GOP promises, Trump and the GOP assured us that if we gave them the keys to the kingdom, they’d get this one done. While there have been some window-dressing moves to chip away at Obamacare, the disastrous law still lives and continues to be funded by Trump and the GOP. Despite this fact, they have been repeating the promise to repeal Obamacare since the 2018 midterms, and Trump promised yesterday that “the Republican party will soon be known as the party of healthcare.”
Do you remember when the Republican party was known as the party of free markets, free citizens, and smaller government? Good times.
We learned yesterday that Trump and the GOP will use distractions like Robert Mueller’s investigation to hide their lies of the past, but they will also recycle as many lies as necessary in their vain attempt to win in 2020.
