Being a police officer in Chicago is unlike any other city in the nation. In many areas, the gangs really do run the streets like in a 70s cop drama where certain places are off limits to law enforcement.
But it isn’t just the high levels of crime or the heavy population of armed criminals. A city the size of Chicago should be able to muster the manpower to retake the streets as has been done in most of Los Angeles, New York City, and other crime-ridden major cities. The difference is the police have been taught valuable and unfortunate lessons about how they’re to operate. If their’s a way to make it seem like they’re in the wrong, they’ll be crucified by politicians and the media. If they are the ones being wronged, politicians and the media look away and yawn.
An event last week was a perfect example of the dysfunctional way police are treated on the streets by gangs and then in the press by media and politicians.
The incident in question involved two veteran tactical police officers performing a drug bust on the West 4700 block of Gladys Avenue in West Garfield Park. As one of the officers subdued the suspect, the other stood to watch the dangerous streets around them. One perpetrator allegedly reached into the car and grabbed the drugs that were seized, then took off. The officer who was not with the subject gave chase, at which point a small mob of around ten people surrounded the remaining officer.
They claimed to have guns and at least one of them said they would shoot the police officers if they didn’t release their suspect. With no other options, the officer complied.
“Ten people surrounded me indicating they had firearms, then one person away from me … holding his waist … indicating he’d use the firearm against me.”
This is Chicago, 2019. They can’t stop crime. They can’t even contain the crime. In this gun-free city, there seems to be plenty of guns in the hands of the bad guys while law abiding citizens are forced to go unprotected.
A write-up in the Chicago Tribune breaks it all down:

What are police officers supposed to do when they’re outnumbered and outgunned in broad daylight? If they can be so easily overpowered during the day, what can possibly be done at night when there is more crime and more criminals? These are questions that really have no answers, not because there are no possible solutions but because the system that keeps corrupt politicians in power is the system that needs to be fought. Anyone who will be truly tough on crime has no chance against a leftist Rahm Emanuel or his progressive minions who want to drop compassion bombs all over the city in hopes the crime will stop.
The police, for the most part, seem to be stuck between the Democrats and a hard place. They can’t get the support they need, but if they try to do their jobs the right way, their careers won’t last long. Chicago needs a complete political makeover. But for that to happen, it seems like the city has to reach rock bottom in order for their citizens to realize decades of Democratic rule is the whole reason they’re city is failing. It’s a lesson that’s been brewing over time, yet it seems like the stranglehold of leftist ideologies offering different variations of last year’s failed solutions casts a spell over Chicago voters. They see that there are problems, but they continue to vote for the people who created and sustained the problems in the first place.
Few cities in America are closer to economic and crime-related collapse than Chicago. Democrats create problems, then somehow convince the population they have a better solution this time, promise! It’s a cycle of decadence that’s unlikely to stop before it’s too late.
