Now that all charges against Jussie Smollett have been dropped by prosecutors, many are wondering if the DOJ is going to pick up the federal case of him using the mail system to send himself a threatening letter. If they don’t, it’s very likely we’ll never know the full truth behind what happened.
But in the court of public opinion, perspectives are generated based on what we hear and how it plays with what we feel. Those who have heard the evidence and smell cover-up and privilege at play will always doubt Smollett’s accounts. Some who support him now or supported him before are going to pretend like he’s now being vindicated, but deep down it would be hard for anyone who’s heard about what the police say happened to believe anything this guy has to say going forward.
This is why this quote from an interview he gave shortly after the “attack” is so funny:
“I feel the weight of just telling the truth. There really is no weight to telling the truth. It’s a little scary sometimes, but if you tell the truth, you don’t have to be looking over your shoulder.”
Of course, those in jail right now for lesser crimes are probably seeing nothing funny about this at all.
