According to a Hamas official, the rocket attack from the Gaza Strip that hit an Israeli home, injuring eight including two children, was ordered by Iran.
The report from JPost confirmed the claim but noted it was still condoned by Hamas.
He claimed that Iran “went over the heads” of Hamas leadership and ordered an Islamic Jihad cell operating out of the Gaza Strip to carry out the attack.
While senior officials in both Egypt and Gaza confirmed that Iran had ordered the attack, they claimed that the Hamas leadership was aware of the plans to fire a rocket deep into Israeli territory.
Two weeks ago, I speculated the reason Hamas was provoking Israel at that time was to start a war that would draw in international support for their people who are currently protesting in the streets. It made sense at that time to start “poking the bear” in order to draw attention away from their own internal failures.
When news of the most recent rocket attack broke, I started questioning my initial perspective. Surely Hamas knows this close to the election, the chances of getting Israel to go into war mode was slim. Their window of opportunity ended about a week ago and will start back up a week after the election.
Now that we know Iran was the source of the attack, it all makes much more sense. This attack has nothing to do with provoking war. It was all about embarrassing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the election. The best hope for Iran to achieve their goals in the Middle East is to get Netanyahu out of the way, replaced by a soft leftist who will bow to Iran’s and the United Nations’ will just as President Obama did with the United States.
Iran wants Netanyahu out. There’s zero doubt about that. Hopefully the people won’t be swayed by their attacks and have the discernment on election day to keep themselves safe. Their safety depends on reelecting Netanyahu.
