One of the loneliest things to be in the world of politics is a conservative who does not bow down to President Trump. What’s even worse is being someone whose allegiance to the Constitution, conservatism, faith, family, and the truth supersedes personal feelings, which is why I have no problem praising the President when he does well. This, of course, makes me a target for the NeverTrumpers and Democrats.
I call it how I see it. When he does well, I praise him and/or his policies. When he does poorly, I criticize. That means, as my friend from Hawaii notes, I’m an “equal opportunity offender.”
I agree it's best to be an equal-opportunity offender. Neither Democrats nor Republicans get a free ride. https://t.co/rNoiGgwDJy

As an ardent supporter of border security, people often assume I’m a big Trump fan. While I appreciate the President’s recent attempts to force Congress to fund the wall, I’m equally disappointed that he waited so long. It’s an inconvenient fact his hardcore supporters love to omit that he signed 11 spending deals before “getting tough” once the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives. That same toughness applied at any point in the previous two years would have had a much higher chance of resulting in wall funding. Before the midterm elections in 2018, he held some sway over red state Democrats in the Senate, possibly enough to get the 60 votes he needed to get his funding.
Unfortunately, we’ll never know.
On the other hand, I don’t blame the President alone for his misstep. I’m certain his advisers and others in his ear, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, White House Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, and several others told the President it would be best to have the battle after the midterms because shutting down the government and playing hardball before the midterms meant they would lose the House and possibly even the Senate. Hindsight being 20/20, it would seem the two-year delay on having the wall funding battle was all for naught. He ended up getting to the exact place he would have been, but at least a year later before getting to start the judiciary clock on his national emergency.
One can argue Obamacare repeal and tax cuts were a bigger priority early on. Fine. Then the wall battle should have started with the first spending bill of 2018 following the tax cut victory and Obamacare repeal debacle.
The reason I’m bringing all of this up now is because it’s time for real conservatives to set aside any tribal allegiances they have and start focusing on steering things in the right direction. Just as we’ve seen the Justice Democrats plant hyper-leftist operatives in the Democratic Party, so too should we be working towards getting real conservatives in office instead of the fake conservatives, aka RINOs, that have control over the GOP.
It’s not just about primary challenges for the weak sticks up for election in 2020. It’s also about steering the President himself in the right direction. We’ve called in the past for the President to remove all leftists from his administration, but let’s face it. That’s not going to happen. What CAN happen is we can generate noise so loud he’s unable to not hear it. This noise can be similar to the backlash he received during the general election when someone in his campaign told him he should consider “softening” his stance on illegal immigrants. He even had a prime time special with Sean Hannity to try to sell “The Softening” to people back in August, 2016.
What happened? Conservatives said, “H— no!” As a result, he switched back to the tough stance that won him the GOP nomination in the first place. Conservatism won because conservative voices were loud enough to keep him from listening to his leftist advisers.
I would argue if there had been even louder voices yelling in unison for the President to fight for border wall funding in the beginning of 2018 rather than waiting until after the GOP lost control of the House of Representatives, we’d already have solid funding from Congress that was well on its way towards getting large portions of the wall and other border security measures built up. Instead, we’re relying on a lengthy process that will certainly shut down wall funding until hopefully the Supreme Court sides with him. In a world in which John Roberts is the Chief Justice and 5th “conservative” vote, I’d say we’re at about 50/50 on actually getting the action on the President’s national emergency declaration.
This is why we’re building the American Conservative Movement. It is not anti-Trump. It is not pro-Trump. It is not anti-GOP or pro-GOP. It’s definitely anti-leftist which makes it anti-Democrat based on the progressive lurch to the left we’re seeing in that party. But above all it’s a pro-Constitution, pro-American, pro-conservatism PAC that will promote conservative candidates, policies, and philosophies.
We’ve seen what happened to the Tea Party. It had no central leadership and very little solidarity in the way it wanted to operate. To call it an “it” is a stretch since the Tea Party manifested in some good, mostly bad organizations that competed with each other to raise funds from patriots who were concerned about President Obama and Obamacare, among other things. Sadly, it has become a shadow of an entity with no foundation left from which to launch any serious candidates.
We’ve also seen what happens with third parties. In fact, I made an effort to help build one. But the path of a third party is one that will take longer than the months or years that we have before real action is needed. Just as the Justice Democrats were able to make an impact in less than a year, so too will the American Conservative Movement seek to make a similar impact in the GOP for America.
If this sounds interesting at all, I encourage you to fill out the form below. We need to see how many people are interested in moving forward with something of this scale before undertaking it. Experience is the best teacher, and I’ve learned many lessons over the years about how to build and maintain a movement that can make a difference.
There has never been a greater need for a conservative renaissance in America. A quick look at Congress will tell you both parties are lurching to the left. It’s time to pull back to the right.
