The best thing that could happen to boost President Trump’s reelection campaign for 2020 would be if Democrats in the House tried to impeach him. It appears that as of now, they’re not going to do that, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hope for it.
Before Republicans jump up in arms against the notion that impeachment would be good for him, stop and think about three important facts:
- Unless the President does something truly despicable, there is zero chance the Senate would actual actually rule against the President. The House can only call for impeachment, at which point the proceedings go to the Senate where the actual impeachment is heard.
- Everything that could come out during impeachment is already established. There’s nothing left for the President to hide other than his tax returns thanks to the Robert Mueller Russia investigation, the New York investigation, and the ramping up investigations in the House. Adding impeachment to the mix won’t bring anything to light the President hasn’t already addressed.
- With all of the investigations that have already taken place, an attempt to impeach him will be repeating a repeated notion that thus far hasn’t produced any real fruit for Democrats. Sure, Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, and others associated with the president have been convicted, but nobody in his immediate orbit (other than possibly Roger Stone) is in any jeopardy.
It’s this last point that’s worth noting the most. Americans have investigation fatigue. Even leftists are tired of getting their hopes up about President Trump going to jail, only to have those hopes dashed continuously for the last three years. They couldn’t demonstrate collusion between the Trump campaign and Russians. They got Michael Flynn for trying to do something good for the country while nailing Manafort and Cohen for things they did separately from their engagement with the President.
An attempt to impeach the President would result in bigger fundraising and better messaging for the Trump campaign.
Impeachment ahead of the 2020 election would be further verification that Democrats have zero interest in helping the nation and only want to harm the President. That narrative would play well with voters if we could somehow get them to try it.
