As this week started, Democrats around the country were buzzing about the potential of the House Judiciary Committee’s new investigation into President Trump either impeaching him or sending him to jail. It represents the shallow level of knowledge of the electorate when it comes to such things. But the real reason there will be a “sweeping” (the new buzzword of the day) investigation into pretty much everything the President has done since being elected in 2016 has nothing to do with sending him to jail and very little to do with the potential to impeach him.
This is all about embarrassing him ahead of the 2020 election. No more. No less.

Before we discuss what this is, let’s discuss what it’s not.
This has next to zero chance of resulting in an impeachment. Why? Because the Robert Mueller investigation has already investigated nearly everything the House intends to investigate. They did it more thoroughly than the House will and they did it with the goal of looking specifically for crimes. If they’re going to impeach the President, they’ll need to come up with more than the Mueller investigation, which they will not.
This has zero chance whatsoever of resulting in criminal charges against the President. That’s not the scope of a House investigation. Again, Mueller’s investigation as well as ongoing investigations by New York were looking for crimes. They found some, but nothing directly connected to the President.
So if it’s not for impeachment or criminal charges, what’s the point of the investigation? It’s all about embarrassment. It’s about narrative. It’s about combing through the work the previous investigations have done in search of things the investigations didn’t deem criminal but the American people might deem offensive. Anything the Democrats can spin to make the President look bad ahead of the 2020 election, they’ll get it on record and out to the people.
It all sounds rosy for the Democrats, right? Not totally. They’re going with the assumption they can find information that will make the President look bad. What if there’s not enough? What if they’re able to come up with things the public already knows, in which case they will have wasted time and taxpayer dollars in an investigation that yielded no fruit instead of addressing the problems that plague the nation.
It’s not only possible but likely the Democrats will paint themselves into a corner on this one. If they can’t produce anything interesting that we haven’t heard already, they’ll prove the President’s point about witch hunts just before the election.
