Now that details have been released about the continuing resolution that would keep the government funded and make changes to how we address the border crisis, our verdict is quick and very difficult to argue against. This is a bad deal. It does as much to make Americans less safe as it does to improve border security.
First, the wall itself is small and limited. It can only be built in the Rio Grande sector, and while the logistics of where to build for now aren’t very meaningful considering how much wall is actually needed, it’s unfortunate that Congress decided where to build rather than leaving it to border security experts to make the choice. Moreover, the “wall” is very limited. No concrete barriers. The qualifications for what can be built are essentially the same as they’ve been in the past, and while it’s better than nothing, it has been intentionally left to the minimum to make it easier to breach.
What did the GOP trade in order to get that 55-mile stretch of fencing? They gave up 8,500 border beds, which means the Democrats’ improved the likelihood of “catch and release” being the prevailing policy for illegal immigrants. This reduction is so dramatic, it’s likely border patrol will have no other choice but to release dangerous criminals into America because Democrats have given them no recourse.
But the worst part of the bill is an amnesty provision that should terrify us all.
This “deal” provides de facto amnesty for anyone claiming to be even in the household of a potential sponsor of an unaccompanied alien minor AND is thus the “Child Trafficking Promotion Act” cc: @realDonaldTrump

Expands the Alternatives to Detention program from 82,000 to 100,000… so instead of housing family units at the border- they get moved into the interior where they almost always stay in the country permanently.

The President will likely sign the deal to prevent another government shutdown, but the trade-offs to get the 55-miles of “pedestrian fencing” will not make Americans safer. This is why the border wall battle should have been fought in the two years the GOP had power instead of waiting for 2019. Big mistake.
