While millions of Americans were enjoying the Super Bowl, embattled Virginia Governor Ralph Northam was considering his future. He called an unscheduled senior staff meeting just prior to the Super Bowl to get perspectives on whether he should resign in shame or continue to attempt to clear his name.

According to the Washington Post, those in or familiar with the meeting said reactions were mixed. The only reaction that is known for sure is that of Northam’s wife, Pam. She wants him to keep fighting.
The controversy stems from a photo of a man in blackface and another man in a Ku Klux Klan outfit holding beer cans. The image was found on Northam’s medical school yearbook page. He initially apologized for the photo, then reversed course and claimed the photo was mistakenly on his page and he was not either people in it. But he added that he had “colored his face dark” for a Michael Jackson dance contest while at the school.
The changing perspectives have compelled most top Democrats in DC and in his home state to call for his resignation.
Earlier in the week, he was being attacked by conservatives for comments in an interview that seemed to indicate a new proposed abortion law he supported would handle an unsuccessful late-term abortion by allowing the child to be born and made comfortable before the mother and doctors discussed what to do next. The insinuation was taken as a consideration over an infant’s life after they were born.
Ralph Northam should resign over his abortion beliefs. What happened 35-years-ago is racist, but unless it’s demonstrated that he was one of those in the photo, its presence on his page alone should not be enough to prompt calls for him to resign over it.
