The two-party system is broken. It’s been broken from the start, but over the last century we’ve seen exactly why our founding fathers generally disliked parties and feared a two-party system the most. It creates a tribal atmosphere that is not conducive to fixing problems while allowing for the creation of new problems.
That’s my attempt to say what likely Independent presidential candidate Howard Schultz was trying to say in part of his op-ed in USA Today. Before anyone condemns me for saying anything nice about a lifelong Democrat, let’s remember that before this condition of ultra-polarization that has taken over the nation since around the turn of the millennium, it was still possible to agree with portions of what someone said without embracing their entire ideology.
The reason that’s no longer an acceptable notion is because the self-perpetuating hatred between the two major parties has manifested into a tribe-over-nation mentality. We’re living in a prequel to 1984 that has the parties instead of a totalitarian government determining how their people are to think. In the dystopian novel, history was changed at the whims of those in charge and the citizens readily accepted whatever changes were made.
“Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia.”
It didn’t matter if moments before, Oceania was actually at war with Eurasia. As far as everyone was concerned, the moment the government changed perspectives, that was the truth and had always been the truth.
We’re seeing that with the parties today. The most obvious example is the use of tariffs. When Chuck Schumer pushed for tariffs on China a few years ago, Republicans were adamantly opposed to them while Democrats were pushing hard. The tariffs that President Trump has imposed on China are nearly identical to the Schumer plan. They’re so similar, Schumer was forced to praise the President after he announced them. But as far as Republicans were concerned, these tariffs were now considered good and to Democrats, they were bad.
Howard Schultz may be making a play to win the presidency. He may also be pushing to receive the VP offer from whoever wins the Democratic nomination, positioning himself as the perfect moderate foil to whichever radical progressive wins the top of the ticket. For all we know at this point, he could just be promoting his book. Some are even saying he’s secretly friends with President Trump and is trying to secure a second term for his buddy.
Regardless of what the actual or long-term plans are for Schultz, he’s certainly taking this seriously and acting like someone who truly wants to win the presidency as an independent.
In theory, I hope he does well. I hope he’s able to keep going through to the end and I would go so far as to hope he actually comes close to winning. This would be a huge wake-up call for a Democratic Party that sees its future in Medicare-for-All, debt-free education, Green New Deals, and other component of socialism that will destroy the nation if ever implemented.
I don’t say that lightly. When Obamacare was first introduced, I wasn’t among those who thought it would destroy the country, though most Republicans were claiming to expect it to bankrupt us by 2016 or so. I knew it would fail. I knew it would change the healthcare system for the worse. I didn’t fear that it would lead to single-payer healthcare because I was dumb enough to believe the Republicans would repeal it if we gave them the opportunity. Their failure to do so is why the real threat – Medicare-for-All – is growing in popularity.
Schultz may be the best chance to inject some sanity into the Democratic Party while simultaneously helping the GOP to retain the White House. But the real benefit he may bring to the nation is an understanding that party politics are failing America.
