Nobody looks good in the government shutdown saga. Nobody’s willing to give in on the one target of contention: the border wall. President Trump won’t sign a deal that doesn’t include it and Democrats won’t offer a deal that does include it. We’re at an impasse.
The President reiterated his commitment to building the wall by saying he would be willing to look at a pro-rated budget for the wall if Congress wants to send him a short-term fix for the shutdown. That way, at least government employees can get a paycheck or two while they wait for negotiations to end.
I’d be shocked if it happens. The Democrats simply won’t budge. They think the wall is their kill shot on the President’s 2020 reelection. Not building it would strike a major blow to his chances. Even a small concession like this seems unlikely.
