The House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) was on with Bret Baier yesterday doing his best to defend the Democrats’ position on not wanting the border wall. The best he could come up with was occasionally invoking Republicans who have questioned the benefits of a wall in the past and saying that walls alone aren’t effective.
He is correct on both accounts. However, the combination of walls, border agents, and technology have been shown to be extremely effective at deterring illegal border crossings around the world. This is indisputable.
While Hoyer was answering whether Democrats would want to remove the walls that are already in place, Baier interjected, “So they work some places.”
Hoyer’s reaction was instant. The way he answered it was just as telling as the words themselves.
“Obviously they work some places.,” Hoyer said.
My Take
What makes this so interesting is that it’s the first time in a while that we’ve heard a high-ranking Democrat acknowledge any benefit whatsoever about walls. It’s obvious to most Democrats that walls definitely work. They just don’t help them politically.
