Based on her rhetoric, one would think Democratic Socialist Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would make sure her campaign employees had all the proper coverage. Accidents can happen and workers’ compensation must be covered to protect employees in case they’re injured on the job. Somehow, that slipped through the cracks, causing her campaign to be fined by the state of New York.
“Hypocrisy at its finest,” state GOP spokeswoman Jessica Proud said. “The so-called champion of workers, when given her own responsibility, is not following the law. It’s unbelievable.”
Ocasio-Cortez has created a reputation of working on behalf of the people, but her employees were grossly unprotected for a while.
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s 2018 congressional campaign was fined by the state of New York for failing to provide the proper workers’ compensation coverage to campaign staffers.
“The employer did not have the required workers’ compensation coverage from March 31, 2018 to April 30, 2018,” Melissa Stewart, the spokeswoman for New York’s Workers Compensation Board, told The New York Daily News. “[It] was issued a final penalty of $1,500, which was paid.”
“This coverage is vital to ensuring workers are protected for on-the-job injuries,” Stewart continued.
Mistakes happen. We tend to blow things out of proportion when our adversaries make even the smallest errors, which is probably what the Ocasio-Cortez team will say if they say anything at all.
Here’s the thing, though. When you ran your campaign the way she did, and when you attempt to govern as she’s attempting to govern, you make sure to dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s on something that’s supposed to be your patented strength. She allegedly fights for the people, but in doing so missed important details that could have devastated the very people working for her.
If this “fighter for the people” didn’t pay enough attention to the details to keep her people covered, can we really trust her outrageous policies? Details matter, especially when you can’t answer the question of how to pay for her grandiose schemes.
