This government shutdown is horrible. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are being directly hurt. Millions of Americans are feeling the effects. Blame whoever you want for what got us here. I’m not interested in blame. It’s time to take a stand. It’s time for a border wall.
Pressure is mounting from all sides and most of it is directed at the President. One of my colleagues even gave a very compelling reason why and method how the President can end the shutdown and propel the GOP forward to victories in 2020 that would solidify funding for the border wall then while also empowering the GOP to finish what they started in 2016. I get it. The concept isn’t a bad one, except for one major flaw.
We cannot wait until the next election before getting border security fixed. We need the wall now.
There can be no backing down. Anything short of major funding – at least the $5.7 billion the President has requested – would be giving away too much. Frankly, I’d like to see the $25 billion necessary to really tackle the wall, but $5.7 billion is a good down payment. At least we would be moving forward, finally.
Make whatever deal you can, Mr. President, but you mustn’t accept any deal that does not give you the funding you need to start building the wall. It may be enticing to use executive powers to fund it, but that would be a huge mistake. Our government is set up the way it is for a reason. Overreaching with the powers of the executive branch is what got us in trouble in the first place. That particular buck needs to stop with this presidency and never surface again.
The Democrats will cave. I know it doesn’t seem likely at this point, but there is definitely something they want more than the political damage it would do to Republicans if they can’t get the wall funded in the President’s first term. Find what that is and make the deal if it’s not too much. No need to give away the farm, but at this point we’re not in a position where we can wait much longer. The wall needs to be built. It should have been built already.
We’re seeing the last opportunity to fund the wall. Backing down now cannot happen. It would be political suicide to not build it, but more importantly it will continue to put Americans in unnecessary jeopardy if we do not defend our borders as a sovereign nation.
