Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes in Texas. She was shot in the head while traveling in a vehicle with her family on December 30.
Eric Black Jr, 20, has been identified as one of the suspects by the Harris County Sheriff’s office. The other man in custody hasn’t officially been named, but KTRK-TV is reporting the other suspect, who is allegedly the shooter, is Larry Woodruffe, 24.
Initial reports based on a sketch artist’s rendition and the family’s description had police looking for a white male. Both suspects in custody are African-American.

Police earlier this week released an artist’s sketch of a possible suspect, but KTRK reported that sources said the suspect who was apprehended does not resemble the drawing.
The girl’s death sparked an outpouring of concern from around the nation, FOX 26 reported.
Retired pro basketball star Shaquille O’Neal and veteran Houston police Officer Kenneth Miles recently said they would pay for the girl’s funeral.
My Take
This is a case in which a good chunk of both mainstream media and the public on social media held off before jumping to conclusions about racism. Yes, there were plenty of posts on both sides that made that jump based on the description of the suspect, but it was actually less of an assumption than we’ve seen in the past.
Reports that this was likely a gang-related incident that targeted the wrong vehicle makes it especially sad. There is enough violence that hits intended targets. When the targets are inadvertent, it adds a sting to the senselessness of it all.
