As Democrats grow accustomed to their renewed power in the House of Representatives, we’ve already seen the expected surge of calls to investigate President Trump. That’s about as surprising as a tornado in Oklahoma. But the next item on their agenda is equally expected, though almost certainly symbolic. Yes, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leftist cohorts are going after gun control legislation.
This may be the first (and only) win for the Democrats as the watered-down proposal being floated for unveiling this week is one that only goes after more background checks. It’s a litmus test (more on that in a moment) and one that has a chance of not only getting bipartisan support in both chambers, but could also get the President’s signature. Why? Because it’s not banning firearms, not limiting clips, and not doing the sort of things that Republicans generally rail against. It’s focused on improved background checks that most in DC agree on but that will do very little to actually fix any problems.
But as Jazz Shaw noted at HotAir:
Get Ready For The Big Democratic Gun Control Push
There’s no mention of an “assault rifle” ban to be seen, nor anything about extended magazines or any of the other usual talking points. Personally, I’ve never been quite as upset about background checks when compared to actual gun bans because ferreting out dangerous criminals who may be attempting to purchase a gun from an authorized outlet is actually a good thing. My chief concern remains the fact that if you give the liberals an inch on these issues they’ll try to take a light-year.
There’s no sign that the Senate is going to support such a proposal, so it may all be moot anyway. But it’s worth asking Pelosi and her friends what specific problem they’re trying to solve. Their usual reasons don’t seem to carry much weight. The background check loophole is largely a myth circulated by gun grabbers to people who probably don’t understand the existing laws. The Democrats almost always point to mass shootings as a reason for doing this, but in one tragedy after another, we find out that the attackers were able to pass a background check before going over the edge.
My Take
As I mentioned before, this is a litmus test in many ways. First, it’s the type of legislation that’s intended to get certain Republicans on record being against background checks before the 2020 election. But more importantly, it’s a test to see the nation’s appetite for gun control in any real form. This isn’t the real form. It’s out there as a first step through which the Democrats can rally support for more draconian measures in the future when they hope to have more clout in the Senate and the White House.
There are plenty of gun laws on the books. If lawmakers focused on helping local and state law enforcement agencies enforce those laws instead of trying to add new ones, perhaps we could have safer streets. Adding more to the books is counterproductive.
