The nation can be unified by Netflix. That’s the (not so serious) takeaway from a report of the most popular shows in 2018 by state, at least according to Google Trends. Netflix doesn’t share actual viewership data so there’s no way to know how close to the truth it is, but we’re going with it because of one show: Jane the Virgin.
I’ll admit up front I haven’t seen the show, but that doesn’t stop me from being surprised that the two states who listed it as the most popular were California and Texas. The politically opposed states agree on nothing, ever, except for this. Granted, the show centers around an Hispanic lead character which likely helps its popularity in the two border states, but that won’t stop me from keeping the illusion of unity alive.
Interestingly, the only other place on the list that includes Jane the Virgin is Washington DC. There was a 16-way-tie for the top spot there, so it’s not really saying much (unless you want to make a joke about how DC can’t ever seem to make up its mind).
Here’s the story on BGR:
These were the most popular Netflix shows in each US state for 2018
All in all, this another reminder that Netflix remains an entertainment juggernaut, with so much content it can give people to watch. Speaking of the year the company has had, the company disclosed on Friday that CEO Reed Hastings is getting a 7 percent increase in his compensation, which could hit as much as $31.5 million in salary and stock options next year.
My Take
No, this really doesn’t mean much. But if leftist California and conservative Texas can at least agree on what shows they like, surely they can agree on bigger issues, right? Well, probably not, but here’s to wishful thinking!
