I’ll be the first to admit I was concerned that Melania Trump wouldn’t be an effective First Lady when her husband won the presidency. It’s not that I thought she would be bad in the role. I simply didn’t expect her to do very much.
She proved me wrong, especially in her second year in the White House. Not only was she active with her anti-bullying campaign, but she also participated in many more events and ceremonies than most previous First Ladies. Presence is one of the most important aspects of the role and Melania Trump is doing her part very well.
She also faced an extreme amount of criticism from both the legitimate press as well as the fake press such as late night talk show hosts and popular leftist bloggers. She was targeted with more venom than her predecessors, including former Republican First Ladies.
Nevertheless, her involvement was stellar. She even did some personnel management, which is not out of the ordinary but the public nature of her outing of several White House employees was unprecedented. She defended her husband publicly and behind the scenes.
No matter what you think of the President, the First Lady has proven to be worthy of praise across the board. In 2018, she really established herself as an important component of the White House and the administration. We expect more of that in 2019.
