Outrage is flaring up again over border security as a second child this month has died after being taken into U.S. custody. This time, 8-year-old Felipe Alonzo-Gomez from Guatemala was treated at a hospital on Christmas Eve, but after being released started showing more severe symptoms and was brought back.
He died shortly after midnight at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, N.M.
Guatemalan boy, 8, dies in US Border Patrol custody
Immigration officials say an agent first “noticed that the child showed signs of potential illness” Monday and brought the boy and his father to the medical center, where the boy was diagnosed with a “common cold.”
Prior to leaving the hospital, though, staff found a fever. They discharged the boy in the mid-afternoon with prescriptions for amoxicillin and Ibuprofen.

This is the second incident involving a migrant family crossing the border away from a port of entry in order to get picked up by border patrol. The first incident happened earlier this month.
7-year-old immigrant girl dies after Border Patrol arrest
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A 7-year-old girl who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border with her father last week died after being taken into the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol, federal immigration authorities confirmed Thursday.
The Washington Post reports the girl died of dehydration and shock more than eight hours after she was arrested by agents near Lordsburg, New Mexico. The girl was from Guatemala and was traveling with a group of 163 people who approached agents to turn themselves in on Dec. 6.
My Take
These deaths are avoidable. I am not so callous as to say asylum seekers should go home, though that seems to be a prevailing narrative coming from many on the right. Still, they’re given reasonable expectations to meet, including waiting patiently in Mexico for their opportunity to utilize a port of entry through which they can begin the process of claiming asylum.
Unfortunately, many of the migrants have been given false information. Others are simply unwilling or unable to wait and go through the process. They see a shortcut by simply crossing the border and finding the nearest border patrol agents to take them into custody.
If they wait patiently with the accommodations being offered by the Mexican government, they will not have to put their children at risk. The ports of entry are there for a reason. Children are not dying by claiming asylum in this manner. It’s only happening when someone convinces them they need to cross the border illegally and allow themselves to be detained.
Progressives may argue that this is inhumane. If they really want to help, they should get Beto O’Rourke or someone else to fix this problem for them:
These migrants are clearly in very bad situations. Few Americans have ever had to make the choices these people have had to make. For their safety, especially the children, they must do it the right way by going through a port of entry.
