The upcoming Hellboy reboot drew controversy and criticism early on when David Harbour was selected for the role. It wasn’t because Harbour was a bad choice, but fans of the original movie were just as disappointed as the actor of the titular character for not even being asked.
Ron Perlman, who brought the character to life n the 2004 film version, is now at peace over the snub, but he still doesn’t like to talk about it.
Ron Perlman Is Still Upset About Hellboy
After years of hoping, fans are finally about to get a brand new Hellboy movie. Unfortunately, what many of those fans really wanted was a third installment of the franchise written and directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman in the title role. While any hopes that the trilogy might be completed have been dead for a while, it turns out Ron Perlman is still frustrated by the whole thing, mostly because he feels like he let down the fans. According to Perlman…
I felt like we owed the fans closure, and there were too many people moving in too many other directions and I just couldn’t pull it off. So if you ask me about it, it’s kind of still an open wound.
But fans aren’t just upset about the decision to bring in a new lead actor. They’re annoyed that Hollywood went with a reboot instead of allowing director Guillermo del Toro to finish off the trilogy. They’ve been lashing out on Twitter as the trending hashtag is topped by mostly negative reactions.
that HELLBOY trailer makes a great case for GDT’s near-obsessive use of practical effects to create the creatures in his movies — which is to say, every beast in this looks Real Bad

Guillermo Del Toro: I would like to make Hellboy III, please.
Hollywood: Nah, dude. Not profitable enough.
GDT: Then I will make my own film about Abe Sapien's cock & balls. It will win awards & make America uncomfortably horny.
*later*
H: The fuck?
GDT: Never doubt me.

Looks like the Marvel Netflix version of the previous movies.
So… maybe okay, but MAN this isn't making not getting GDT's true HELLBOY 3 any less painful (and it feels crummy to say about a Neil Marshall movie, too 🙁 https://t.co/NwEiBwMTMN

My Take
I’m a big Harbour fan. He is the underrated glue that holds the Stranger Things universe together. He also put his body through the type of physical transformation that Perlman never would have, opting instead for makeup to give him the Hellboy bulk. Harbour’s muscles are real.
Unfortunately, kudos for Harbour’s body transformation is pretty much all the kudos I can give at this point. I’ll probably still see the movie, but the trailer didn’t give me hope that we’re going to see something great, or even and improvement to the fan-beloved original.
Some are saying that they’ve “Marveled” Hellboy to give it a better chance at the box office, but judging by the trailer it seems more like a clunky attempt to avoid “DCing” it instead. I was excited. Now, I’m very much in the “meh” camp.
