As an American, I can sympathize with the French plight over taxes. It was the rejection of new taxes which sparked the American Revolution. Such acts, among them the Boston Tea Party, were pivotal to our nation’s founding.
The American Revolution set off a chain of Atlantic Revolutions, the most memorable being the French Revolution. The French Revolution, rather than being fought over ideals such as liberty, held equality as its core value. As a result of their revolution France had a lot of dead rich people and a dictator that, to this day, is used to make fun of angry short men. The Gilets Jaunes movement in Paris and other parts of France is the closest the country has come to a similarly scaled revolution in modern times. Similarly the movement is a left-wing revolution advocating an arguably worse outcome.
One might object by saying there is no wrong way to protest taxes, but those people have not seen the additional policies the French protesters are advocating. Earlier the Associated Press reported France relenting its fuel tax hike. Their reporting noted that the move appeased few protesters. Understandably, they didn’t buy the postponing the tax. But the movement’s demands are far more spawn of envy than one of wanting to keep one’s own money.
France’s “yellow vest” protesters have a formal list of demands. (Or at least their spokespeople do.) #giletsjaunes https://t.co/amgsWHYEpY pic.twitter.com/uTPVgiT2XC

List, in French, of Gilet Jaunes’ demands. Highlights include opposing austere measures towards France’s lower class.

(Disclaimer: Not sure about the stat)
I don't think what you understand is correct. The core claim I've seen is "the gov't is redistributing wealth upwards using ecology & tax reform as an excuse & rural & small-town people are being especially screwed"

The French right-wing, which includes Marine Le Pen, is on board for this movement. And why not? It’s shrewd political maneuvering to capitalize off of Macron’s rising unpopularity. It’s worth noting, even with Le Pens more nationalist leanings, France still does not have a conservative presence. A lot of countries don’t, like Brazil. Thus, we shouldn’t be surprise when we hear about progressives clashing with socialists. But France took it to the next level. This conflict is globalist socialist vs nationalist socialist. Both want the same goals, most specifically, government coercing people away from coal, oil, and natural gas, however Macron’s globalist strategy has gotten pushback from the lower class socialist who want this coercion to be at the expense of other people’s money.
This would align the Gilets Jaunes with another famous class warfare/social justice movement to rummage its way through France, the Nazis. Hitler was very much a champion of the working people, and an opponent of the previous ruling class. From history, we know that nationalism + socialism = fascism, a word the Left doesn’t know. It doesn’t end well. However, seemingly predictable, we have yet to see the complete outcome of globalist socialism.
