When the words Trump, Russia, Cohen, Moscow, Lie, and Mueller all appear in the same story, everyone jumps to the conclusion the facts relating to the story will benefit the narrative that President Trump colluded with Russia to help him win the 2016 presidential election. Under most circumstances, it would. In the case of today’s news, it actually has the opposite effect.
Let’s look at left-leaning NPR’s take on the events:
The Mueller Russia Investigation: What You Need To Know After All The Headlines
It undercuts Trump’s sometime denials in 2016 and since that he had, as he often put it, “nothing to do” with Russia. In fact he was pursuing a major deal that he suggested on Thursday he might have kept pursuing through the year and might have tried to conclude if he hadn’t been elected.
It means Trump world already had a channel open with Moscow at the same time the Russian government was trying to bore one into Trump’s campaign. Meanwhile it was waging a campaign of “active measures” against the U.S. and the West aimed at corroding faith in democracy and, ultimately, helping Trump become president.
Did you catch all that? This story lends itself to the idea that there was no collusion. Oh, you missed it? Allow me to elaborate.
This was a deal that both sides lawfully continued to pursue (he was a candidate, not an elected official at the time) until June. Around that time, Trump had essentially secured the GOP nomination. As he suggested today, he would have kept pushing for the deal that he’s been coveting for three decades if he hadn’t won the election. Russia would have wanted the deal to go through as well.
In other words, this runs counter to the argument Russia wanted Trump to win. If he could have lost, the deal could have moved forward. I’m not suggesting Russia didn’t try to help Trump win. I’m just pointing out that Cohen’s admission is not the smoking gun many seem to think it is. If anything, it runs contrary to their narrative.
The second point I highlighted in the NPR story is also important. Many have asserted Russia was actively trying to get someone into the inner circle of Trump’s world. Cohen’s admission seems to indicate there was an open channel of communication already established between Russia and Trump. That’s not collusion. That’s business.
The details of Cohen’s confession combined with the fact that Robert Mueller’s team seems eager to continue working with him tells us two important things:
- Cohen has nothing worth pursuing against President Trump himself. If he did, he would not have gone to court today at all. He would be the star witness against the President.
- Some people close to the President, including Donald Jr., are likely still in the crosshairs. He has given Mueller’s team enough to pursue others associated with the campaign, but the biggest prize is still elusive.
Cohen’s revised story tells us Russia and the Trump organization were working towards building Trump Tower in Moscow. The only thing that could have stopped it was Trump winning the election. Shouldn’t Moscow have wanted him to lose as a result?
