The Wall Street Journal reported today that President Trump is dissatisfied with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, citing anonymous sources claiming the President blames Mnuchin for recommending Fed chair Jerome Powell. The President has labeled the Fed under Powell as a threat to the booming economy.
Shortly after the report started spreading, the President Tweeted:
I am extremely happy and proud of the job being done by @USTreasury Secretary @StevenMnuchin1. The FAKE NEWS likes to write stories to the contrary, quoting phony sources or jealous people, but they aren’t true. They never like to ask me for a quote b/c it would kill their story.

My Take
Despite the President’s claims, it’s very likely he has spoken ill of Mnuchin. That doesn’t necessarily mean Mcuchin is on the chopping block, but he has failed on numerous occasions to push the President’s agenda. Tax reform is likely the only thing that helped him keep his job beyond 2017, though the final bill barely reflected Mnuchin’s goals with tax cuts.
It was Mcuchin who supposedly pushed Powell onto the President. For that alone, it’s likely the President isn’t happy with his Treasury Secretary.
