President Trump told advisers he wants Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen out as soon as possible, according to a report from the Washington Post. He cited lackluster performance on border security and expects her fired within weeks or sooner.
Trump is preparing to remove Kirstjen Nielsen as Homeland Security secretary, aides say
Nielsen has been reluctant to leave the administration before reaching the one-year mark as secretary on Dec. 6, but she has been unhappy in the job for several months, according to colleagues. Trump has berated her during Cabinet meetings, belittled her to other White House staff and tagged her months ago as a “Bushie,” a reference to her previous service under President George W. Bush and meant to cast suspicion on her loyalty.
The article also indicates that Chief of Staff John Kelly, who is supposedly fighting for Nielson to keep her job, may be on shaky ground as well.
My Take
We knew the President would shake things up after the election. He started by forcing Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ resignation. Half of the cabinet and high ranking officials have had rumors floated in the last few months about their job security.
Is Nielsen doing a poor job? It’s hard to say. Apprehensions of illegal immigrants are up, but that’s a two-edged sword. They are catching a higher number but there is also a higher number making it across the border. Stopping them from ever coming over is the top priority. Apprehending and potentially deporting them is secondary.
This could be the start of a massive purge of top officials in the White House. John Kelly has been arguably the most stable senior staffer, but even his job is up in the air. The White House may have a completely different look by the time the 2020 elections roll around.
