If you live in Minnesota, you won’t hear much about Republican Attorney General candidate Doug Wardlow. The Republican in this race rarely gets much attention as the position has been held by a Democrat for four decades. This time around, Republicans are keeping Wardlow off the radar by design.
Their gambit is that his competitor, DNC Vice Chairman Keith Ellison, is poisoned enough by abuse allegations that people will vote against him regardless of who his opponent is. The last thing they want is for people to hold their nose and vote for Ellison based on Wardlow’s support for President Trump.
State attorneys general have unique sway over policy. They’re the ones who can most easily stall or halt the President’s agenda by filing suits against them. We’ve seen this used against many of the President’s actions from the various travel bans to family separation policies of illegal immigrants. It’s the one tool in the Democrats’ toolbox that has proven most effective at slowing down the President’s actions.
For this reason, Republicans are banking on Ellison’s implosion based on the credible accusations made against him by his ex-girlfriend. Karen Monahan. Also a Democrat, Monahan’s corroborated accusations of physical and mental abuse should be the nails in Ellison’s political coffins.
Republicans don’t need to sell Wardlow. They simply need to destroy Ellison.
The blue state should be safe for a Democrat as powerful as Ellison, but the party made a mistake by letting him run. His alleged abuses are a stain on the party that supposedly believes and supports women. They should have cut him loose long ago.
