If someone wanted to build a conspiracy theory the size of faking the moon landings, they could say Saudi Arabia was behind the mail bombings and Pittsburgh shootings to take American’s attention away from them. It’s ludicrous and there isn’t a shred of evidence for it, but I’m sure someone can come up with a nice theory.
In reality, it’s all a convenient coincidence for the Saudis. The Washington Post will try to bring it back up, but now that it’s been pushed off the front page, only serious new developments will put it back into the spotlight. America’s media attention span is short and once the elections are done in a little over a week, very few in DC will still care.
Jamal Khashoggi’s murder will be brought up whenever Saudi Arabia is in the news, especially when they interact with Washington DC. But calls for action will subside. Senators will put their righteous indignation towards something else. Media outlets other than the Washington Post will make decisions on a case-by-case basis whether or not to highlight stories about Khashoggi. If they’re not big enough, they’ll be footnotes of news snippets.
We will continue to talk about Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Jamal Khashoggi. Until something is done, we won’t let this story slide down the news cycle trap door.
