One would be hard pressed to find someone who desperately wants media attention more than attorney Michael Avenatti. He has taken on two high-profile clients this year and has turned their stories into platforms for him to promote his own stardom. He claims to want to be President. Is that really the case?
Maybe it is. Maybe he hates President Trump so badly that he wants to do everything he can to push him out of office in 2020. Maybe he thinks he’s the most qualified person among Democrats to make that happen. After all, he’s a white male, and according to a profile he did for TIME Magazine, it’ll take a white male to beat Trump.
Michael Avenatti’s Past Won’t Stop Him From Running in 2020
A run for President would thrust Avenatti into the middle of the party’s identity crisis. The Democrats have not been this powerless since the 1920s, and their members have responded by nominating a historic number of women and people of color for office. But when it comes to the party’s presidential nominee in 2020, Avenatti thinks in different terms. “I think it better be a white male,” he says. He hastens to add that he wishes it weren’t so, but it’s undeniable that people listen to white men more than they do others; it’s why he’s been successful representing Daniels and immigrant mothers, he says. “When you have a white male making the arguments, they carry more weight,” he says. “Should they carry more weight? Absolutely not. But do they? Yes.”
Obviously, many Democrats are cringing and even criticizing Avenatti for the statement, which he has denied saying. Unfortunately for him, his persona on television makes it very believable that he would not only say those words, but that he would believe them.
This wasn’t the first controversy surrounding Avenatti this week. A past associate wants money and a judge is giving it to him.
Judge enters $4.85 million judgment against Michael Avenatti
A California judge ruled on Monday that Michael Avenatti, the outspoken attorney for adult-film star Stormy Daniels, is in breach of a personal obligation to pay a $4.85 million debt.
The ruling, by California Superior Court Judge Dennis Landin, is just the latest development in a long-running dispute between Avenatti and Jason Frank, an attorney who once did legal work for Avenatti’s law firm, who contends that Avenatti and his law firm have repeatedly reneged on a multi-million-dollar settlement agreement approved by a bankruptcy court earlier this year.
Things are looking pretty bad for Avenatti this week and there’s still a full day left. But wait, there’s more. On top of a couple of other investigations involving Avenatti, Senator Chuck Grassley says the Department of Justice needs to go after him as well.
Grassley sends criminal referral for attorney Michael Avenatti and Kavanaugh accuser
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said Thursday he has referred attorney Michael Avenatti and client Julie Swetnick — who accused Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct — for criminal investigation regarding a potential “conspiracy” to provide false statements to Congress and obstruct its investigation.
Avenatti, who also is a potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and works as the attorney for porn star Stormy Daniels, represented Swetnick, who accused Kavanaugh during confirmation proceedings of being involved in or present at “gang” and “train” rapes at high school parties in the 1980s. He denied it.
He wanted all the attention. This week, he’s getting it.
We saw this coming months ago when Avenatti started to get more press than his client, Stormy Daniels. She is a porn star who accused the President of the United States of a crime, yet somehow her lawyer made more of a splash than she did in the media. He was appearing on any show that would have him on, usually talking more about how bad the President was than his client or her case. He was basking in the spotlight and refused to let it shine on anything else.
When someone wants as much attention as Michael Avenatti, they better make sure their actions and words stand up to scrutiny. The closer we look at Avenatti, the more we learn he was never worth any of the attention he’s been given.
Avenatti’s week reminds me of a scene from Jack Reacher.
