There are plenty of examples of political correctness going too far, especially when calling out conservatives. Sometimes, there are examples where the conservative (or moderate right-leaning journalist in this case) truly was insensitive while trying to call out political correctness. NBC’s Megyn Kelly fell into that trap today.
She issued an apology:
Megyn Kelly Apologizes: “History Of Blackface In Our Culture Is Abhorrent”
Dear friends & teammates –
One of the wonderful things about my job is that I get the chance to express and hear a lot of opinions. Today is one of those days where listening carefully to other points of view, including from friends and colleagues, is leading me to rethink my own views.
I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep.
I’ve never been a “pc” kind of person — but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age. Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year. This is a time for more understanding, love, sensitivity and honor, and I want to be part of that. I look forward to continuing that discussion.
I’m honored to work with all of you every day.
My Take
I’ve always thought Kelly was wrong on the right issues and right on the wrong issues. This is an example of her being wrong on the wrong issue. She should never have brought it up and once she did bring it up, she shouldn’t have said what she did.
I’m not embracing the politically correct culture that drives most outrage, but this is one of those topics that are simply best avoided. The whole “blackface” phenomenon of the past was clearly racist in intention. Just because some people found it funny in the past doesn’t make it okay to defend today.
Should Kelly be reprimanded? Is her career over? Who knows? Frankly, who cares? I’ve always considered Megyn Kelly to be an entertainer, not a journalist.
Covid variant BA.5 is spreading. It appears milder but much more contagious and evades natural immunity. Best to boost your immune system with new Z-Dtox and Z-Stack nutraceuticals from our dear friend, the late Dr. Vladimir Zelenko.
Odd as hell. Meagan Kelly says she has no problem with white people pretending to be black people on Halloween, and a certain group foams at the mouth and screams. Liz Warren on the other hand had herself described in professional directories and elsewhere as being “Native American”, thereby ALSO PRETENDING to be someone of a DIFFERENT RACE, and the same people who scream about Kelly shrug and say, “No big deal.”
