Conspiracy theorists will be in an uproar when they hear the latest coming out of the Kingdom. This time, the news about Saudi Arabia is hitting closer to home. Much closer.
Reports are coming in that the Saudis have purchased at least five adjacent properties in McLean, in Northern Virginia, barely a stone’s throw from the nation’s capital.
The kingdom paid $43 million on May 24 to purchase Steve Case‘s Merrywood Estate at 700 Chain Bridge Road, making it the biggest residential property sale in the region’s history. The county valued the property, which was also the childhood home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, at just shy of $24 million.
Then on July 10, the embassy paid $17.8 million to purchase 670 Chain Bridge Road and $2.1 million to purchase 660 Chain Bridge Road in what appears to be a package deal, according to property records and an online listing.
I’m no conspiracy theorist, but I’ll admit this move is disconcerting. Saudi Arabia doesn’t do anything without a reason and the location definitely cannot be a coincidence. Not only is it close to DC, but it’s also an extremely exclusive area that’s safe from prying eyes.
If there’s anything nefarious in the works, this is the place where it could easily be staged. Saudi Arabia may be an important ally, but they’ve also had a history of contempt towards America and our way of life. We’ll keep a close eye on what’s happening here.
