Following the surrender by the Democrats on the government shutdown, the White House released a statement from President Trump. He also reiterated his willingness to make a deal with them on illegal immigration, stressing that it needed to be “good for our country.”
I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses and are now willing to fund our great military, border patrol, first responders, and insurance for vulnerable children. As I have always said, once the Government is funded, my Administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration. We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country.
This sounds more presidential than some of his past statements, but he did take a moment to rub it in the Democrats’ faces with a campaign email:
I’m more hopeful than I’ve been in the recent past that we may get a decent deal on illegal immigration, but my old fear still lingers. Will he give away too much (amnesty) in exchange for his wall? That seems to be the singular goal he’s had for a while and with his recent spin on making sure it’s a good deal, I’m concerned it may not be.
