Yesterday, we reported that Aleksei Navalny was running for Russian President against Vladimir Putin. Though his chances were slim, he was the only one many Russians considered capable of even challenging Putin. Now, the challenge has already been quashed.
Russian opposition leader barred from presidential race
Russia’s Central Electoral Commission has barred opposition leader Alexei Navalny from running in March’s presidential election against Russian President Vladimir Putin, per the BBC. Navalny was convicted of embezzlement earlier this year after a 2013 verdict on the same charges was overturned by the European Court of Human Rights, which determined that he had received an unfair trial.
Why it matters: Navalny is seen as the only person who can credibly challenge Putin, who is running a fourth term as president, in next year’s race. After the decision, he called for his supporters to boycott the presidential vote in protest.
After submitting his application, Navalny had warned his supporters to be prepared to protest if the Russian government rejected his bid. As of now, there are no reports of riots in the streets, but getting news out of Russia can be tricky.
My Take
Russia is within its rights to interpret their laws as they see fit. Navalny’s conviction makes sense as a reason for him to be excluded from the election, but one has to wonder if Putin isn’t letting out a sigh of relief as he pushes for his fourth term. If anyone had a tiny chance of beating him, it would have been Navalny. Now, we’ll likely never know. Stay tuned, though, as we probably haven’t heard the last of him.
